March 8 — The Grenadiers took care of the Stillman (Ala.) Tigers 84-66 to advance to the second round of the NAIA Division II men’s basketball tournament.
Senior forward, Joe Jackson, led the team in both points (20) and tied as the leader in assists (5). Senior forward, Cody Young, led the way for the Grenadiers dominating performance on the boards with 12 rebounds. The Grenadiers out-rebounded the Tigers 56 to 42.
The defense carried the Grenadiers to the victory, as they have all season, holding the Tigers to only 31 percent shooting, 25 percent from 3-point range and forcing 16 turnovers. After a solid start by both teams, Stillman lead IU Southeast 17-16 with a little over 10 minutes to play in the first half. The Grenadiers defense took over and they closed out the first on a 29-7 run and they never looked back from there.
Guards Jaime Johnson and Nick Tinsley also gave big contributions on the offensive end. Johnson finished with 16 points and 5 assists and Tinsley finished with 13 points, 7 rebounds and 2 assists. Tinsley went down in the second half with an apparent ankle injury. The seriousness of the injury and his availability for tomorrow’s game is unsure at this time.
The Grenadiers will play the winner of No. 1 Indiana Wesleyan (26-7) and No. 8 Antelope Valley (Calif.) (20-7) in tomorrow’s second round game. The game is scheduled to begin at 5 p.m. ET.
