Campus welcomes bluegrass quartet

The Alison Brown Quartet performed the first concert in the Different Drummer Series this season at the Ogle Center. The quartet incorporates the banjo, acoustic guitar, drum and bass —without lyrics — to entertain the audience with a unique blend of music. Larry Atamanuik, drummer, described the music.

Beating the couch potato: Battling the Freshman 15

Being a college freshman can mean many things including living away from home, classes and the ability to do absolutely nothing but video games. Most of all, it’s the freedom to make decisions. Yet, this new phase of a college student’s life most often lacks the second most important factor of the Freshman 15 — exercise. Exercise is a key component of weight loss.

Fall Festival celebrates Harvest weekend

The Fall Festival on Oct. 3 helped kick off the Harvest Homecoming festivities. The annual hot air balloon race that accompanies the festival was canceled due to high winds. Janie Spitznagel, adviser in the Academic Success Center and representative for the Harvest Homecoming Board of Directors, said officials checked wind speeds at an altitude of 2,000 to 3,000 feet, and the wind speeds were more than 25 to 30 mph.

Veterans series discuss post-traumatic stress

IUS Personal Counseling Services presented a session discussing traumatic reactions and post-traumatic stress disorder. This was the second in a five-part Veteran Wellness Series. The presentations are open to everyone. Heading the discussion group was Michael Day, IUS personal counselor.

Munchie mania: Battling the Freshman 15

Weight gain is a problem that nearly every American battles at some point in their lives. However, even with all the weight loss campaigns, the average college student fails to realize there is a growing problem with weight gain for their age group or feel they have no reason to worry. “I’ve been this skinny my entire life, so I don’t think I have to worry about any weight gain,” Tyler Delaney, music freshman, said. “The only difference I hope to see is height.” According to a study by Washington University in St. Louis, more than 70 percent of college students gain an average of 15 pounds in their first year at college.

Campus Carnival

Students and their families came to campus to enjoy a Mini-Carnival in McCullough Plaza. The Children’s Hour Series, part of the Student Program Council, hosted the Mini-Carnival to welcome families to the campus. Michelle Harris, SPC chair of Children’s Hour Series, said she was pleased to see the families enjoying IU Southeast.

Children’s Center celebrates Hispanic Heritage Month

The Adult Student Center raised awareness about cultural diversity by celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month as part of their Brown Bag Diversity Series. The series will expose students to different religions, backgrounds and sexual orientations. It will also meet First-Year Seminar requirements for underclassmen who attend. Each month, a different heritage is celebrated in order to promote diversity and acceptance among students.

Smarti Gras exposes students

The lounge in the top floor of the University Center hosted Penthouse Party on the Bayou on Sept. 15 and 16. The party was themed after Mardi Gras and organized by the Adult Student Center, Career Services, Counseling Services and the Mentoring Center. The event, referred to as Smarti Gras, exposed students to the services offered on the top floor of the University Center South.

Student shares experiences in Madrid

Jimmy Polivka, Spanish senior, shared his experiences studying abroad in Madrid. Polivka spent 11 months in Madrid studying at Universidad Complutense de Madrid. Polivka said he had to decide between two different programs. “One program was in Peru, and the other was in Spain,” Polivka said. “I chose Spain because my family is Spanish.”

Campus organization re-establishes goals

Connecting students with alumni in the areas of leadership, tradition and community is the vision statement of the re-established Student Alumni Association. Many changes have gone into effect with the SAA. Jerry Wayne, vice chancellor for Alumni and Community Relations, is overseeing the changes. Josh Kornberg, communications junior, is the current SAA president.

Student traveler meets local celebrities abroad

In 2007, one of the sexiest cities in the world that MSN Travel picked was Galway, Ireland. Getting off the bus in Galway, it didn’t take long to understand why. The city is packed with pubs, college students from the National University of Ireland, bookstores, boutiques and eco-friendly shops. Street performers, otherwise known as “buskers” are out in the city square just trying to make a buck or get their music out there.

Professor enjoys research

Ben Nassim, professor of chemistry, has been part of the School of Natural Sciences for nearly three decades. Nassim has been employed at IU Southeast since 1982, when he was hired to teach basic and advanced chemistry courses. “I liked the landscape of IU Southeast, and I also liked the faculty I interviewed with,” Nassim said. “I liked the campus very much.”
