IUS Police officer appointed to higher position

Keith Folkner, former IUS Police officer, was sworn in as sergeant on Nov. 9. Folkner is on duty during the night shift. “When we went through the process, the hiring committee had no doubt he was the right person,” Charlie Edelen, IUS Police chief, said. “He made it pretty easy on us to choose him.”

Campus tribute honors Veterans Day

Veteran’s Day did not pass by unnoticed for many members of the IUS community. Two events were held in honor of U.S. veterans and to remind citizens of those who fought for the country. The third annual IUS Veteran’s Day memorial service was held at McCullough Plaza on Nov. 10. During the ringing of the bells, marking the end of the fighting during World War I, students, local veterans and members of the community circled the clock in remembrance of those who died fighting for the U.S.

Poltergeist prowls students

Patrick Burns, paranormal investigator, led students to the depths of Crestview in hopes of finding evidence of life beyond the grave. Not knowing what to expect, many students found themselves surprised at what they discovered. “Everyone loves a good scare,” Channell Barbour, associate director of Campus Life, said, “whether you believe in ghosts or not.” Barbour said students would be interested in seeing what phenomena, if any, they would find on campus.

Paranormal investigator spooks students

Brian Laythe, paranormal investigator with Indiana Paranormal Group, spoke at IU Southeast about his research with paranormal phenomena to help students better understand the science behind ghost sightings. “My goal is to provide scientific research,” Laythe said. “I want it to be a science again.” Laythe said he has been studying the paranormal for about three years and described himself as a skeptical believer. While he realizes there are downfalls to researching the paranormal, he said he understands peoples’ skepticism in believing certain evidence.

Zombies roam campus

Booooooooooks. Booooooooooks. Moaning zombies led by members of the English Club roamed campus in search of brains and literature donations. Students, professors and members of the community, with torn clothes and rotting flesh, attacked IU Southeast hoping to spread the literary infection.

Wyandotte settles score with policy

After settling her lawsuit against Indiana University for age discrimination, Annette Wyandotte, associate professor of English and former dean of the School of Arts and Letters, will continue to work at IU Southeast. In April 2010, Wyandotte was told she could no longer keep her position as dean because of an IU rule forcing administrative positions to retire at 65. In Wyandotte’s academic review, the School of Arts and Letters voted in favor of her continuing her position as dean.

Professor gives hope to mentally ill

James Jones, law professor at the University of Louisville, spoke to IUS students about his struggles and triumphs living with bipolar disorder. About 80 students attended the seminar, which was co-sponsored by the Psychology Club and Common Experience. Many students said they attended to complete their intellectual event requirement for their First-Year seminars, however, Angel Crawford, business marketing freshman, said Jones’ speech was uplifting for people like her who also suffer from mental disorders.

Student driven to help teach special needs children

Priscilla Schelling, elementary education sophomore, has had years of experience working with special needs children. Schelling works for a YMCA program. Every day after school, Schelling teaches a group of 30 children at Georgetown Elementary School. Schelling said they play games, eat snacks and she helps them with homework. “After school, they don’t want to work in a school setting,” Schelling said.

Chancellor’s Medallion Dinner honors leaders

More than 560 members of IU Southeast and the community attended the Chancellor’s Medallion Dinner to honor three students with scholarships and two community service leaders. Since 1994, the dinner has been held annually to raise money for student scholarships, but it also serves a purpose by honoring community activism. “The Medallion Dinner is a public opportunity for IU Southeast to thank the community,” Rose Wathen, vice president and co-chair of the Medallion Committee, said.
