Magician returns to IUS

Families gathered in the Hoosier Room to watch the third annual magic show performed by Rusty Ammerman on Feb. 19. The free event brought almost 50 people to IU Southeast to enjoy an hour and a half long comedy ridden magic show. Ammerman is from Connersville, Ind., and, during the show, he brought several members of the audience on stage with him to participate in tricks. For nearly every act, Ammerman invited a member of the audience to join him or required audience participation.

Rivals race to rack up points

The Grenadiers celebrated homecoming with a 110-76 win over Alice Lloyd Eagles on Feb. 11 in the Activities Building. The win brought the IU Southeast Grenadiers record to 19-7 and 9-1 in the Kentucky Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. This win was the fifth consecutive win at home for the IUS men’s basketball team. The Grenadiers started the game with a strong lead on the Eagles. Both teams played a defensive game, resulting in 39 shots from the free throw line.

SGA motions for microwaves

The Student Government Association held its weekly meeting on Feb. 21 in University Center South. The majority of the 19 minutes of the meeting consisted of a follow-up from Josh Kornberg, communications senior and SGA president, on the working projects of the SGA. The main topic of conversation was adding additional microwaves to The Commons. Currently, The Commons have two microwaves, one of which is frequently out of service. The SGA has been working with Physical Plant to add three additional microwaves.

IUS blood drive draws different types

Alpha Phi partnered with the Red Cross to host a blood drive on Jan. 30 in the Hoosier Room. Alpha Phi has worked with the Red Cross for more than five years to bring blood drives to IU Southeast in order to get students involved with giving back to the community. Lauren Smith, marketing senior and Alpha Phi vice president, said the sorority decided to host blood drives as part of their cardiac care philanthropy.

Grenadiers donate bikes to tykes

During the winter break, the IUS men’s basketball team kept busy by adding wins to their 13-6 record but also found time to give back to the community. The team, led by Wiley Brown, IUS men’s head basketball coach, partnered with the New Albany-Floyd County Parks Department to provide new bicycles to 25 children in need. The bikes were provided by an anonymous donor. “It’s a good program,” Brown said. “With all this diabetes, high blood pressure and all the stuff going on with the kids these days, I think it is definitely a good situation that they can get out and ride their bike and have fun.”

GSA plans to expand unisex restrooms

The Gay Straight Alliance has been working on a proposal that will create awareness of gender neutral restrooms and add additional facilities on campus. Hunter Luthi, informatics senior and GSA president, has been working for the last six months on expanding the gender neutral restrooms on campus. Unlike most restrooms on campus that are denoted as either “mens” or “womens,” the gender neutral restrooms would be open for use by both sexes. Currently, there are four restrooms on campus that are designated as gender neutral: two in Knobview Hall near the Ogle Center and two on either side of the IUS Library coffee shop. All four of these restrooms are single stall.

Seasons begin with No. 1 ranking

The IUS men’s and women’s basketball teams were recently ranked No. 1 in the Kentucky Intercollegiate Athletic Conference coaches’ polls. Both teams finished the 2010-11 season with winning records of 26-7 and 21-11. Each team has a history of success in conference and regular season victories, and Joe Glover, athletic director, said he predicts this season will be no different. “I was really thrilled to see the rank of both teams as preseason No. 1,” Glover said. “It was no surprise. They work really hard, and it’s really a testament to the coaching staff and the players for all their hard work.”

Blueprint hopes to increase graduation rates

The six regional campuses of Indiana University recently released the Blueprint for Student Attainment. The 128-paged document, was released earlier this month, and it outlines a strategic plan set forth by the campuses to help students reach graduation at the regional campuses. “Ultimately, the blueprint is about enhancing services for students,” Chancellor Sandra Patterson-Randles said. “We want students to stay in school, and we want them to persist to graduation. This is all really about student benefit.”

Fall Festival draws big crowds to IUS

IU Southeast celebrated Harvest Homecoming with its annual Fall Festival, turning the Evergreen Parking Lot into an area of fun on Oct. 2. Residents from the Kentuckiana area also came to campus to join in on the festivities, including games, inflatable jumpers and pumpkin paintings. The activities required tickets that could be purchased for 50 cents each, but most activities required one or two.

Grenadiers triumphant over Lady Oaks

The IUS women’s tennis team took home a big victory against the Oakland City University Lady Oaks on Sept. 29. The Grenadiers dropped one match, bringing their final score to 8-1. “Coming into the match, we knew that we’ve beaten teams they had lost to, so we knew we should win,” Emily McGrath, international studies junior, said.
