SGA changes senator probationary period

The Student Government Association held its meeting on Nov. 3 by talking about the syllabus proposal that was taken to the Student Recruitment and Retention Committee on Oct. 30. The syllabus proposal would give faculty the means to put a syllabus onto OneStart before classes begin and encourage them to use the utility. Jay McTyier, program analyst for the Registrar, talked about how IU Southeast is technologically prepared to set up the proposal.

Proposal passes in SGA for new policy

The Student Government Association passed a proposal that would change how syllabuses are viewed at their meeting on Oct. 27. According to the proposal, instead of the course syllabus going onto OnCourse when classes start, they will be available before the start of the respective semester. Kevin Evans, secondary education junior and SGA vice president, said he has been working on getting the proposal into effect since the start of the school year. “The policy still has to go through some committees and the Faculty Senate before it can be approved,” Evans said. “The chancellor will also have to look over it.”

SGA president discusses new summer tuition prices

The Student Government Association held its State of the Student Body Address on Oct. 27 in The Commons at noon, where Josh Kornberg, communications senior and SGA president, discussed a range of topics. Kevin Evans, secondary education junior and SGA vice president, said the event started a little late because of some of the sponsors, and the cheerleaders were running behind. “Chick-fil-A is going to have their cow here,” Evans said. “We’re waiting for the dance team and the cheerleaders to show up, so we’re going to be slightly behind [schedule].”

The Student Government Association discussed restructuring its organization at the Oct. 13 meeting. On Oct. 5, the SGA talked about bringing in new senators by having the deans of each school select five students to be placed on a ballot, and the top two voted in by students would become senators. The Student Government Association had their meeting on Oct. 5 and swore in the probationary senators Stephon Moore, journalism freshman, and Brandon Smith, secondary education freshman. “It’s good to be a full senator,” Smith said. “I really want to be able to help other students.” Hannah Smith, sociology sophomore, was nominated for an associate justice position.

The Student Government Association began their meeting on Sept. 29 by swearing in Ryan Miller, education junior, as a full-time senator. Normally, senators have to go through a two-week probationary period before they can become full senators. However, since Miller was a senator last fall, the SGA voted him in on Sept. 22. “I would like a motion to open elections for the tech officer position,” Josh Sesar, math junior and SGA senator, said.

The Student Government Association started their meeting on Sept. 15 by deciding on a new secretary. Dulguun Otgonsuren, undecided sophomore, was nominated for the position and voted in as the SGA secretary. “I looked over the description, and it’s something I could do,” Otgonsuren said. “I just wanted to step up.”

SGA creates new logo

Student activity fee includes new programs

The Student Activity Fee distribution list was released during the summer and serves to outline exactly where students’ collective $827,351 is disbursed. Per the 2011-12 school year, the Student Activity Fee is $5.30 per credit hour, per student. The Student Life Committee — comprised of eight students, two faculty members, and two staff members — decides how much money is to be allocated in various group accounts. In order to receive money, the university’s accounts have to submit a request of the funds they wish to be allotted to them.
