The Annual Campus Security Act and Fire Safety Report for 2011 was released on Oct. 1, showing a significant decrease in the number of crimes and arrests that took place on campus from 2009 and 2010. This report showcases information regarding campus crime statistics and procedures for fire safety, as well as statistics showing drug and alcohol violations on campus for the last three years. Charlie Edelen, IUS Police chief, said this report can be very useful for students who want to find out how safe the IUS campus is.

Low student presence creates debate uproar

IUS Horizon October 28, 2012
IU Southeast took center stage on Oct. 23 by serving as the location for a second debate between Indiana Senatorial candidates. Hosted by the Indiana Debate Commission, the event took place in the Ogle Center, where nearly 50 TV and radio stations broadcast a live discussion between Democrat Joe Donnelly, Libertarian Andrew Horning and Republican Richard Mourdock. However, limited seating at the debate caused a low amount of attendance for the IUS community.

Students collaborate work with new hub

IUS Horizon October 21, 2012
The IT Department added two new collaboration hub tables on the second floor lounge of Hillside Hall. Finished just a week before fall classes began, this source of technology allows students to share individual work from their laptops through a big screen TV. “This is brand new for this campus,” Tom Sawyer, chief information officer for the IT Department, said. “This is as good as you’re going to see anywhere in the country,” Sawyer said. “Nobody else has done it. The company that put this together for us had never done one like this.” The collaboration hub tables work by letting up to four students connect their laptops or tablets to the TV screen by connecting a chord to their computers. The chords are kept in a small black box on the table, which also brings up a touch screen panel.

Hosted by the International Program, the event took place on Oct. 10 and 11 and featured an array of fair trade items from across the world, including jewelry from Peru, purses from Guatemala and scarves from Nepal. The items were provided by Ten Thousand Villages, a fair trade retailer that creates a market for artisan products to be sold.

IUS Horizon October 7, 2012
The Psi Chi and Psychology Club received its second award as a model chapter from the International Psi Chi Honor Society. The psychology club was given a certificate to represent the honor. “Basically, it’s showing that we’re a good chapter doing a lot of good work,” Todd Manson, assistant professor of psychology and faculty co-adviser for Psi Chi, said. Manson said the club was awarded the honor for several reasons, including hosting campus events, inducting a record number of new members in the previous two years and having students present research at regional conferences.

IUS Horizon September 30, 2012
As the schedule of classes became available for spring semester, advisers saddled up and reined in students during the Wild, Wild Week of Advising. The third annual Advising Week took place from Sept. 24-27 and featured a western appearance, where students were able to find out information about classes, when registration appointments started and the importance of advising. IUS promotes political activism

IUS Horizon September 23, 2012
Students discovered how to become more involved and better informed in politics during “Constitution Day: Powering the Individual Citizen,” hosted by the IUS Civil Liberties Union. The event featured a panel of IUS political science professors and a representative from the American CLU of Indiana who shared ways students can take an active stance in government. Stephon Moore, political science and journalism sophomore and president of the IUS CLU, said Constitution Day should be important to students because it impacts their everyday lives.

Enrollment falls back for semester

IUS Horizon September 16, 2012
IU Southeast enrollment dropped by 5 percent for the fall 2012 semester and has the smallest population out of the eight regional Indiana University campuses. Christopher Crews, associate director of Admissions, said IU Southeast expected a drop due to the demographics. “We expected and knew that the demographics in this area wouldn’t support continued growth at that rate,” Crews said.

Center aims to gain license

IUS Horizon September 9, 2012
The Children’s Center has been undergoing a few changes for this semester. Wanda Borrego, coordinator of the Children’s Center, said they are currently working toward becoming a state-licensed facility. “The Children’s Center is governed by the university, which in itself, is an entity,” Borrego said. “It was never a requirement for us to be state licensed. The university thought it would be more secure for us to have a second governing body.”
