IUS Police capture computer crook

Mark McIntyre, 53, was arrested on a charge of stealing two laptops and more than $1,000 worth of books from the IUS Bookstore. He was caught in the act by University Police on Nov. 3. Charlie Edelen, IUS Police chief, said McIntyre’s criminal history is more than 20 pages long. Edelen said there were mostly nonviolent thefts.

Comedian makes student attendance butt of joke

On her tour of 100 colleges, Tracey Ashley, comedian, visited IU Southeast on Nov. 15 after flying into Albany, Ind., and driving a total of five hours to get to campus. “I just rode in a car for five hours, just drove all this way, and there are 22 people here,” Ashley said. Ashley said her acts are just about her life. However, the theme of the event seemed to be more about the size of the crowd that actually showed up for the event.

Ogle Center brings Agatha Christie’s ‘Mousetrap’ to life

The New York Times claims it is, “one of the most skillfully written murder mysteries ever produced.” It is Agatha Christie’s “Mousetrap,” and, no, it is not the board game. “Mousetrap” is play centered around a group of strangers stranded in a boarding house during a snow storm, and one of whom is a murderer. The IUS Theater Department debuted the play on Oct. 28 in the Robinson Theatre of the Ogle Center. Rehearsals started back in September for Mousetrap.

Crimson and Cream showcase talent

Basketball season is officially underway for the IUS men’s and women’s Crimson and Cream game in the Activities Building on Oct. 27. The Grenadiers put on a three-point shooting contest, a dunking showcase and two-20-minute scrimmages. The women’s scrimmage ended with the Red team beating the White team, 53-50.

Spooky students party

Monsters, fairies, super heroes and bumblebees gather in the Hoosier Room to dance the night away at the fourth annual Halloween Bash sponsored by Residence Life and Housing. The bash was put on by community advisers from the residence halls and Jen Crompton, assistant director of Residence Life. The Halloween Bash was from 9 p.m. until midnight, and students danced, snacked, participated in contests and talked with friends during the party.

Captain Adviser saves student schedules

Staff from various departments pitched in during Advising Week, from Oct. 10 to Oct. 13, encouraging all students to meet with an adviser before registering for spring classes. Some students can’t be bothered, then they’re not ready for graduation,” Ron Dunlop, adviser for the School of Business, said. “They need to come in so we can tell them where to head, regardless of their major.” The theme of this year’s Advising Week was superheroes, and IU Southeast had its own caped crusader in the form of Captain Adviser.

Banned book reading brings boisterous banter

The IUS Library hosted a read out from banned or challenged books on Sept. 27 in honor of Banned Books Week. The American Library Association has observed the last week of September as Banned Books Week since 1982, and three years ago, IU Southeast had its first banned books read out. “I thought it would be a good thing to do, something interesting on campus,” Maria Accardi, assistant librarian, said.

Herptiles come crawling to IUS

Lizards, snakes, frogs and turtles made their way to IU Southeast for the “Herps Alive!” event on Sept. 25 in the Hoosier Room. Herps Alive is a program that focuses on educating children and adults alike about herptiles. The 17th annual event was organized by Kim Pelle, coordinator for the Adult Student Center. Herps Alive allows children to interact closely with herptiles and learn more about their behaviors.Keith Gisser, herpetologist and presenter of Herps Alive, said he became interested in herptiles when he was young.

Capabilities Walk has big turnout at IUS

The IUS ALLIES partnered with The Down Syndrome Support Association of Southern Indiana to present the third annual Celebrate Our Capabilities Walk on Saturday, Sept. 17. ALLIES is a student group whose goal is to create alliances in the community to increase awareness of Down syndrome and other disabilities and the walk is held every year. Rachel McComb said it’s a good experience for her daughter, Jenni Armour.

Summer renovations revamp Food Court

During the summer break, renovations to the Food Court took place to open up space and improve customer flow. Although renovations to the Food Court occurred in 2007, lack of funding for sufficient expansion and increased enrollment caused long lines during the lunch hour. Dana Wavle, vice chancellor of Administrative Affairs, said the goal of the renovations was to reconfigure and expand the layout to help with customer flow.
