Mark Cole, visiting ceramics artist, introduced himself to a studio filled with students using a narrative approach. Born on July 4 in Detroit, Cole, the youngest of three boys, realized his passion for fishing and art at a young age. “Nature has been something that has fascinated me for years,” Cole said.

Knights defeat Grenadiers

The Grenadiers fell to Marian University Knights on March 15, with a score of 3-0. The scoreless game was a result of quick hits and good defense by both teams. The innings were a continuous three up, three down style for most of the game. Both teams played well in defense to keep the opposing team from scoring.

Former murder convict serves to raise awareness

Stacey Lannert, ex-convict, said she does not want people to feel sorry for her. Lannert gave an inspirational speech at IU Southeast on March 6 informing students of the sexual abuse she experienced during her childhood, which led her to shooting and killing her father. Lannert said one in four women is a victim of domestic violence or sexual abuse.

Grenadiers win then lose to Ravens

The IUS baseball team had its first home game on Tuesday, Feb. 28. The Grenadiers played against the Anderson University Ravens in a doubleheader. The teams split. The Grenadiers shut out the Ravens the first game, with a score of 5-0.

IUS men get over-confident

The IUS men’s basketball team played St. Louis College of Pharmacy during the first round of the Kentucky Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Tournament on, Feb. 25. IU Southeast was ranked No. 14 in the tournament. The Grenadiers started out the first half slow. Both teams were close in points during most of the first half, but the St. Louis Eutectics were up by four.

Professor presents power of Sex and The Brain

The Sex and The Brain Workshop was held at the University Center North, room 127, on Feb. 14. This event was hosted by the IUS Psychology Club. The presenter of the workshop was Meghan Kahn, assistant professor of psychology, who specializes in the brain. About 85 students attended this workshop. Several topics arose in discussion at the workshop. Kahn presented a Power Point on sex and how it affects the brain. She gave comparisons to how animals attract mates and how far they will go to in order to attract one another. Kahn compared the behavior of humans showing how they were similar and how they differ from one another.

IUS hosts homecoming graffiti party

IU Southeast held a blackout and graffiti party for its annual homecoming event, hosted by the Multicultural Student Union, in the Hoosier Room on Feb. 9. IUS students were able to attend for free while guests paid $5. There was a variety of food, such as meatballs, chicken wings, stuffed mushrooms and more.

Physics professor passionate about travel

Subhranil De, assistant professor of physics, has had many stops in his life’s travels. He has inhabited places such as Berlin, Germany, Denmark, India and France. De was born in Calcutta, India. His native tongue is Bengali, although English has always been a close second. “My father is a physicist, too, and, when I was 1 year old, [my parents and I] moved to Berlin, West Germany,” De said. “Long story short — from age 1 to 6 — I lived with my parents in Germany, the U.S. and Denmark, and then we moved back to India and settled there. Later on, we lived in Normandy in France for a year, as well.”

Asbury Eagles swoop down on Grenadiers

The IUS women’s basketball team lost to Asbury on Jan. 26 with a final score of 76-73. The game was packed with hard fouls, scrums on the floor for loose balls and a double technical foul. The opening tip went to the Eagles as they pushed it up and down the floor for several early baskets.

Student veteran crafts sci-fi gem

Michael McInnish, informatics junior, is a 20-year veteran in the process of releasing an e-book. McInnish’s e-book is entitled “Der Ra Buf,” which means gem, found and polished. “It is a science fiction novel about a person who has lived on this planet long before humans came along,” McInnish said.

Printmaking student finds passion in plants

College is about developing skills and learning what passion and drives oneself has. Wende Cudmore, fine arts senior, has a passion for learning and has found a skill she is very good at — printmaking. Cudmore said she not only creates prints but puts them on the paper she has made herself out of a variety of vegetables and fruits. “I love the process of printmaking,” Cudmore said. “I like to layer my work to invoke people to wonder my process.”
