The forum was co-sponsored by Barack Obama’s Campaign for Change and the IUS College Democrats. Thomas Wolf, professor of political science, moderated the forum.

Roemer opened the forum by talking about his Indiana background in Indiana and his 12 years in Congress. He mentioned the window of opportunity that he felt that America had after the tragedy of Sept. 11, 2001 to end its addiction to oil.

 “I feel the Bush Administration failed us by refusing to seriously explore other avenues for energy,” Roemer said.

Roemer said he believes the Bush presidency has been one of failure and lost opportunities.

“Hurricane Katrina is one example of this,” Roemer said. “Because it was so terribly handled by the federal government, even the impoverished nation of Bangladesh offered to send New Orleans aid.”

 Roemer said he believes the November elections are very important and Americans should pay close attention to it.

He said he supports Obama in the election because of his economic and foreign policy ideas.

“While he was a state legislator in Illinois, Obama worked for tax cuts for the middle class,” Roemer said. “If elected president, Obama will see there are no taxes on senior citizens making $50,000 or less a year.”

Former Assistant Secretary of State Rice then addressed the forum. “It’s been seven years since Sept. 11, and President Bush is going to leave the next president in a terrible situation,” Rice said. “A war in Iraq that never should’ve happened, more of our soldiers being killed in Afghanistan, aggression by Russia, genocide in Darfur and our military stretched to the breaking point.”

Rice told the audience that America has to clean up its image as a nation that has been associated with torture during the Bush presidency.

“The question before us: do we want to continue these failed policies?” Rice said. “Senator McCain has said he would vote to do the Iraq War all over again.”

 She said Obama doesn’t just want to be a house-keeper behind George Bush.

“Obama wants to take this country to a higher level of civility,” Rice said.

She said the citizens of Iraq want a time-table for removal of American military personnel.

“Unfortunately, Senator McCain rejects that,” Rice said. “McCain wants an indefinite stay of troops, perhaps up to 100 years.”

Rice said foreign relationships have declined during the Bush years.

“Whatever happened to diplomacy?” Rice said. “Iran was almost pushed into its nuclear capabilities after being labeled a part of the Axis of Evil.”

Rice said foreign policy under Obama would follow a middle course between military belligerence and acquiescence.

“In dealing with countries like Iran, Obama would use diplomacy coupled with pressure from our  European allies,” Rice said.

The former assistant secretary of state criticized how some Bush supporters, like Senator McCain, called European allies like Germany and France “adversaries” because they didn’t support the invasion of Iraq.

Another issue Rice addressed was the American addiction to oil.

“Saudi Arabia is getting rich from our dollars that we borrow from China to pay for the Saudi oil,” she said.

Rice cautioned against the hope of alleviating the price of oil by offshore drilling.

“Offshore oil is just a fraction, there’s not enough of it in the long run,” Rice said. “We should invest in renewable energy instead.”

“How many of you have ever heard Senator McCain say anything about reducing our need for oil?” Rice asked.

Rice said McCain represents more of the status-quo: alienating our allies, more dependence on big oil, more trade agreements that hurt workers and the shoot first and ask questions later mentality.

“Remember when McCain was singing, Bomb Bomb Bomb Iran?” Rice asked.

She said this election might be the last chance that America has to regain its credibility among the world community.

“The entire world will be watching on who puts his hand on the Bible to take the oath of office next Jan. 20,” Rice said. “Will it really be a change from the previous eight years, or just more of the same? We might not get another chance.”

Several members of the audience had an opportunity to ask both Roemer and Rice questions about foreign policy, the economy and the presidential campaign.

Bryan Shepherd, philosophy teacher at Jefferson Community College, asked about the legalities of the Patriot Act.

“I’m worried one day I’m going to wake up and the U.S. has been turned into a police-state,” Shepherd said.

Rice said the Patriot Act needs to be amended.

“It’s presently written like America is in a constant state of war,” she said.

Barbara Anderson, of Haven House Services, said she was insulted as a woman and a former supporter of Hillary Clinton, by McCain’s selection of Sarah Palin as his vice presidential pick.

Rice said Obama is a scholar in constitutional law and believes it sad when our own government betrays the Constitution.

“Senator McCain criticized the Supreme Court for restoring habeas corpus to prisoners at Guantanamo,” Rice said. “He said it was the worst Supreme Court decision ever made, and here I thought the Dred Scott decision was.”

John Doyle, assistant professor of computer science, said he was concerned about how this country was treating it foreign guests.

Roemer answered that Homeland Security has been set up like a bureaucracy.

“The Bush Administration has not followed with the correct priorities,” Roemer said. “We need to treat our Muslim neighbors not as pariahs, but as fellow Americans among us.”

With the dorms being open the athletics building has extended hours so he makes sure everything goes well. Glover also helps out with the cheer and dance team’s finances as well as handling the eligibility and compliance issues for the athletic programs. Glover has always had a love for sports. “I love what sports teaches us about life and how we live life through sports.” Glover said. Early in his tenure as sports information director he redesigned the athletic Web site and increased traffic on the site. Glover also assisted in the management and planning of multiple Kentucky Intercollegiate Athletic Conference and National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics tournaments. “Joe has done an outstanding job working with the athletic department,” Pat Mrozowski, IUS Athletics director, said.  “I really love working with Joe and am truly looking forward to working with him through his expanded role here with the department.” Glover’s past work experience has almost always been in some kind of sports relation. He started out as a freelance sports writer for The Tribune.  He has also worked for ESPN Radio in Louisville and at WVHF-TV Indiana Sports as a broadcast analyst. Glover is very involved in the work he does.  He is a member of the College Sports Information Directors of America, as well as serving on their committee. He also serves on the IU Southeast Marketing Advisory committee and is a National Association of College Marketing Administators member. The taproom will offer a Belgium style café with food prepared by a professional chef as well as assorted merchandise. Baylor said the brewery will have the capacity to create four times as much beer as the original location, enabling NABC to distribute their brands locally and regionally in cans and kegs, starting with cities like Louisville, Indianapolis and Bloomington. NABC has already begun promoting their brews in Louisville, through what Baylor has dubbed “guerilla marketing.” “We are taking the beer to Louisville bars and making an event out of it,” Baylor said. Saturday, Sept. 5, NABC invaded Germantown’s neighborhood Nachbar, selling several different brews, while local artists performed. “It went well and the music was great,” Jared Williamson, NABC brewer, said. “I was only there during the afternoon and it was packed.” Within the next three months, NABC will expand their guerilla marketing to three other Louisville bars in the highlands. With his guerilla marketing and the Bank Street Brew House, Baylor said he hopes to attract and promote the creative class and new urbanism to New Albany. “Years ago, people began to move further and further away into the suburbs. We want to give people a reason to move back to the city,” Baylor said. “We want to return it to what it was, when it was — A place where people live downtown and have local businesses within walking distance.” Baylor said he feels this expansion is no easy task. “I knew it was going to be a bitch. And it has been a bitch. The recession, which some people seem to think isn’t really happening, is making money tight,” Baylor said. “This type of major expansion makes things more difficult, but I actually believe in this.” Baylor said the NABC also firmly believes in progressivism for New Albany, Floyd County, Metro Louisville and the surrounding areas, but as NABC progresses, he assures that the existing brewery will continue to function as it always has. “We will have several house brews made for distribution at Bank Street, while Jared [Williamson] will continue to work on new brews at the original location,” Baylor said. It doesn’t take a genius to figure out that things are changing at IU Southeast, and Seuth Chaleunphonh, the new dean of Student Life, is making sure of that. Chaleunphonh has taken on his new position with high hopes for the future. As dean of Student Life, he has taken on the responsibilities of the old director of Campus Life position. A day on campus for Chaleunphonh usually consists of attending two or more student related programs or events, staff meetings working on upcoming projects and looking for ways to improve the Campus Life department. Chaleunphonh said his favorite thing about the IUS campus is the familiar atmosphere. “I really like the fact that students really feel at home here,” he said. He said believes most students come to IU Southeast because they feel at home and the people here are very open. “I have been 99 percent successful in greeting people and smiling at people and having that reciprocated,” Chaleunphonh said. There is a specific time for everything. Chaleunphonh said he feels that this is the right time for change, a change from a partial college experience to the real deal. “Because we have gotten new residence halls this year, we wanted to create more of a complete college experience,” he said. Campus Life is trying to develop more school pride and an improvement in the overall student experience. Chaleunphonh said his goal is to create a more united campus, where students feel they are welcomed at IU Southeast. He said he does not want for students to settle for IU Southeast until they transfer to another university, but to have the will to stay until they graduate. He said he wants to build relationships among students, instead of students coming to school, going to class and going back to their cars. Cari Edwards, office assistant at Campus Life, said Chaleunphonh has many great ideas. “I think that Seuth is very interested in students, and he is very excited about campus life,” she said. Edwards said she believes that Chaleunphonh is passionate about what he does, and he cares about students. “He remembers all the students that he has met by their names, as if he has been here a long time,” she said. Attendance at school functions and sporting events is another item on Chaleunphonh’s list. He said he has seen a significant improvement so far this year. “I was at a spirit club meeting this week, and the athletic department has even noticed more attendance,” he said. He has a great amount of experience and an extreme focus on his goal. With the ball rolling, we will be seeing many new improvements in campus life around IU Southeast and hopefully we will become a more united campus. Chaleunphonh is originally from Seattle. He attended North Park University in Chicago and did his undergraduate work in physics and sociology. He attended the University of Illinois and graduated with a master’s degree in social work. He also graduated from the University of St. Francis in Joliet, Ill. with a master’s degree in educational leadership. In his spare time, Chaleunphonh likes to garden, read biographies and play sports such as golf, tennis and bowling. He said he also looks forward to playing foosball with students on campus. For the last few decades, through advances in technology, American pop has drifted in many directions experimenting with new sounds, styles and recording techniques. More recently, ideas have run dry. Music has become stale, over-produced and lacks the creativity once so prevalent. The Raconteurs, Cold War Kids, the Black Keys and My Morning Jacket, all of which have toured with Dr. Dog, are new cats using old tricks. Music is being brought back to the basics and “Fate” will only help guide the transition. “Let go of the old ones we’ve got some new ones,” bassist Toby Leaman, aka Tables said as he channels a Neil Young type vocal tone on “The Old Days.” The track breaks into a muddy bass-filled chorus covered with transient harmonizing vocals reminiscent of the Four Aces version of “Mr. Sandman.” The song soon breaks into a wild circus type cotton-eyed jam, violins and all. The album shifts in a slightly darker direction with the “The Ark.” Opened with a pulsating Pink Floyd-ish bass line, “The Ark” combines a “Yer Blues” style guitar riff and fate-filled, eye-reddening lyrics that lead up to the screaming Lennon-like climax, in which Leaman said, “I know because I can and I will.” “The Beach” displays an eerie bass and kick shuffle accompanied by pyschadelic organ tones and reckless Buddy Guy-type vocals that swerve around lyrics of fate and bottles of bourbon becoming “dry as a bone.” While Dr. Dog seems to test new waters with much of “Fate,” songs like “The Breeze,” “From,” and “Army of Ancients” showcase the groups characteristic use of blanketing Beach Boy harmonies and bittersweet piano melodies. I really don’t care what happens to you. As hard as it may seem to fathom, I am not what you would call a “political junkie.” If it were not for the constant bombardment of TV time that candidates use up, I might or might not know who is running in any particular election. If they would move the elections in between March madness and the time when baseball season really gets underway, I might be a little less upset with the media time given to the candidates. No, not really. I know I’m not alone. The Republican National Committee asked the NFL to move the opening Thursday night game up to 7 p.m. to accommodate McCain’s nomination speech. I would have loved to have seen what they would have done if that game went into overtime. They would have told McCain to wait until the game was over or risk a few million people missing it because the game was still on. I take what most people would call a cynical approach to politics; I tend to think of it more as realistic. In today’s day and age of spin control, winning elections is about choosing the right spin on a few key topics. The key to this move is to be enough in the middle on any or all situations so they can flip-flop on any particular point depending on which group they are trying to get money from on that particular day. That is what winning elections is all about; whoever can get the most money from the lobbyists with the deep pockets generally wins elections. And the candidate who has gotten the money from those lobbyists now owes them a favor down the road. Now that favor may be giving a company permission to build a nuclear power plant, or maybe it is for an extension of a government contract. Whatever it may be, it doesn’t have anything to do with me. The people it’s really going to affect are the people who gave money to a particular candidate or party in the first place. So until my income bracket increases dramatically and I decide where I want to build my nuclear power plant, this way of electing our leaders does not work for me. Money makes the world go around. That is an oldie but a goodie, and it’s quite relevant in politics. Don’t let anyone tell you that your vote makes a difference. Unless you have a lot of money to put the people in office who are going to pass the laws that benefit you, then your vote doesn’t really matter. This holds true nationally all the way down to local elections. Call me crazy, but it seems like people with a lot of money could just hire themselves politicians to vote their way on certain laws and legislation. I know at this point you are probably expecting me to give you a quick fix to this problem, but the truth is I don’t think there is one. Everyone in this great country of ours is looking out for number one. No matter whom you are or what you do, if you’re not looking out for your own interests, I can guarantee no one else is either. Now before some of you get all up in arms trying to tell me that there are people out there that truly do care about what happens to the poor and misfortunate and on and on, I’ll grant you there a lot of great people in this country who do put others before themselves, or at least take the time to help others after they first look out for themselves. I guarantee you can’t put any politicians in that group. Nothing is more important to a politician than getting elected or staying in office. I can’t really tell you much on where each candidate stands on different points. And I really don’t care if you do. I don’t want to hear why you think McCain or Obama is the best man for the job. I don’t want to hear or see the ads from either of them telling me how great they are and what they are going to do for this country. I would be interested in hearing what they are going to do for me. No taxes and some sort of government slush fund finding its way into my bank account would be nice. Time will tell if McCain or Obama was the right choice for president. As I have explained my deep respect and admiration for the political system it really only came down to one difference between the two. It is about military service. I served my country proudly in the United States Marine Corps. There is no truer way to serve your country. McCain is a decorated Vietnam veteran, and Obama chose not to serve. That is as simple as it gets. As far as any other character issues, it is impossible to know either candidate thru campaigning and ads. Unless you know that person individually, you really can’t talk to their character. Now go out and vote how you want, just don’t tell me whoever you are voting for is really going to make a difference. Unless, of course, you want to cut me in on the new nuclear power plant you’re building. Richard Young, SGA press secretary and political science senior, said he didn’t think SGA needed to conduct any of its business out of the public. After the executive session motion died, the senate voted to forego the SGA’s bylaws to discuss adding the new senator. Jeff Martin, chief justice and business management senior, said the senate didn’t think through their vote before it was made. “The senate threw out the bylaws for 15 minutes, I think that should raise some red flags,” Martin said. Martin said he was frustrated with the senate for not thinking about what they had done. He said they meant to suspend the executive session rules, not all of the bylaws. Martin said the executive session rules were written to make sure anything said about a probationary senator stays within SGA. “If bad stuff comes up, we can handle it if that person becomes irate,” Martin said. “Not that it happens, but if it does, it’s just a safety measure.” James Bonsall said he thought Martin was out of line for calling out the senate during the meeting. Flo Gonya, SGA president and general studies senior, said she didn’t think Martin was out of line. “I don’t think they really understood what they were doing,” Gonya said. “It was one of those things that was not well thought-out.” Gonya said the senate needs to be more careful about how they approach business in the senate, and that Martin was within his duties “He was right,” Gonya said. “They suspended the bylaws, and they weren’t specific. He warned them that they were operating without the guidelines of their own bylaws, and that’s dangerous.” The senate voted to reinstate the bylaws for the remainder of the meeting. Baker was not voted in or out of the senate, and will be considered at their next meeting on Sept. 18. Martin said he doesn’t expect the senate to look to him before every vote, but would like to see more training on the SGA constitution and bylaws. He said previous SGA justices gave quizzes on the constitution and bylaws to the senators to make sure they understood them. Martin said he planned on looking into similar measures to educate new and current senators on the constitution and bylaws. Gonya said she thought the measures would be a good idea. “I think we need a little more training,” Gonya said. Martin also said there are also amendments to the bylaws that SGA’s judicial office is reviewing. Gonya said she hopes the senate and the judicial office will be able to change the bylaws and the constitution before the next SGA election in the spring. During Gonya’s report to the senate, she said she hopes to organize a demonstration against Barnes and Noble for not posting International Standard Book Numbers on the IUS Bookstore’s Web site. Barnes and Noble’s failure to post ISBNs was mentioned at SGA’s Sept. 4 meeting. Bonsall said Barnes and Noble is still restricting access to ISBNs from students to keep their share of profits. “This is something that’s been going on for a year and a half now, and we should all be pretty POed now,” Bonsall said. Bonsall said students can order books when they register classes, but the ISBNs are still not posted. Gonya said she would work with the All University Student Association to talk about an IU-wide boycott of the bookstores. “I’m sure other campuses are just as upset about this as we are,” Gonya said. Gonya wants to have everything for the demonstration organized by Oct. 17. Representatives from Barnes and Noble are supposed to address the Faculty Senate on that date. IUS students will be fully covered. They will also receive a $1000 stipend for books and supplies and a living allowance equal to the basic allowance for housing rate of an E-5 with dependents as determined by school’s zip code. IU Southeast students can expect $930 a month. These benefits are figures which will apply to service members who have either served 36 months on active duty after September 11, 2001, or those who have served at least 30 days on active duty and have been discharged due to a service-connected disability. Veterans who have served for less time will receive lower percentages of these maximum benefits. In addition to the service requirements, veterans must have been given an honorable, hardship, existed prior to service, or condition interfered with duty discharge. Students currently using the Montgomery G.I. Bill will still be able to use the Post 9/11 Veterans Education Act. IUS Veterans Affairs administrators, ROTC officers and student veterans were pleased with the new legislation. “The Post 9/11 Veterans Education Act is a welcomed program for the military to transfer assets to our families,” Lt. Col Kevin Raybine, IUS Air Force ROTC officer and career service man said. The bill will allow all service members to transfer their education benefits to one of their dependents instead of using it for themselves. Retired Army 1st Sgt Jack Howell, IUS Veterans affairs representative, said the change was long overdue. “It is about time [the government] caught up with the true cost of tuition,” Howell said. The new GI Bill will pay a stipend for living expenses-- an expenditure that often forces students to work full time. “I wouldn’t be able to go to school if it weren’t for the existing GI Bill,” Derrick Holdridge, journalism sophomore, said. Holdridge left the Marine Corps last year. During his four years in the Marines, he was deployed to Afghanistan once and Iraq twice. He currently works full-time as a server at Vincenzo’s in Louisville. “Hopefully, when this new bill starts, I can work part-time and have more time to study,” Holdridge said. Several organizations, including the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Student Veterans of America and the Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America, lobbied for the bill. Their champion was Virginia Senator Jim Webb, a former Marine and Vietnam Veteran who introduced the bill on Jan. 3, 2007, his first day in office. After World War II, returning veteran’s education was covered by the Servicemen's Readjustment Act of 1944 which paid the full cost of tuition, fees and boarding. A 1988 congressional study showed that for every $1 spent on the original GI Bill $7 was returned to the economy through productivity, consumer spending and tax revenue. Though the new bill did receive the necessary support to become a law, it was met with opposition. Senators John McCain, R-Ariz., Lindsey Graham, R-SC, and Richard Burr, R-NC, had drafted their own bill — an improved version of the current Montgomery GI Bill aimed at increasing retention by offering higher incentive for continued service — and they were concerned that Webb’s Post 9/11 Veterans Education Act would negatively affect  reenlistment rates. McCain was absent from the vote, and drew criticism from Sen. Barack Obama. D-Ill., his opponent in the upcoming presidential election. The SGA can only go into executive session for confirmation proceedings, disciplinary proceedings, and for advisers to address the senate. No decisions on legislation may be made during executive session. Why should any SGA matters be discussed behind closed doors at their meetings? Richard Young, press secretary, said during the meeting he doesn’t see why any SGA business should be conducted outside of the public eye. He is completely right. Confirmation proceedings should be public. The students deserve to know why someone is confirmed as a senator or not. Similarly, disciplinary proceedings should be public. Students deserve to know who is not fulfilling their duties, in what ways they have fallen short, and what is going to be done about it. Senators must be held accountable, not only to their fellow senators but to the students they represent. Chief Justice Jeff Martin said disciplinary hearings should be closed in case “bad stuff comes up.” I disagree. Students should know about the actions of their representatives, whether good or bad. By the same token, the senators who are taking disciplinary action should be accountable to students to make sure their actions are appropriate. Frankly, the refusal to discuss a matter in public gives the impression that the SGA has something to hide. The SGA has some important responsibilities. They don’t make policy directly, but they influence it through their representation in the faculty senate and their relationships with the administration. But more importantly, they spend money. Sometimes they spend a lot of money. And a large portion of that money comes from student activity fees. Any organization spending money from student activity fees must be held accountable. The SGA can’t spend money in executive session, but they discuss decisions about who is confirmed as and who remain senators. Senators spend the money. Thus, the SGA discusses important decisions in executive session that affect the spending of student activity fees. The SGA isn’t officially bound by sunshine in government laws because they are not an official governing body, but they should recognize the need for openness and accountability in their proceedings. Going into executive session violates the spirit of sunshine laws. Just because they are not bound by sunshine laws doesn’t mean they shouldn’t abide by their spirit. If something is important enough to discuss at a meeting, it needs to be discussed publicly. If the matter is not something to be discussed publicly, what place does it have at a meeting anyway? It seems many in the current batch of senators realize executive sessions are damaging to the student-student government relationship. I’m not sure throwing the book out the window and suspending the SGA’s bylaws was the best way to handle not being able to go into executive session, but their heads were in the right place. The bylaws are reinstated, but they are clearly in need of some amendment. Now is the perfect time to add a sunshine in government law of their own. The SGA should amend their bylaws to allow and require all business conducted at meetings to be held in the open and get rid of secret executive sessions for good. Meagan Seufert, Special Education Freshman, said she barely made it to campus in her small car when the wind began and once she made it to campus that is when she saw the damage begin to take place. “It was pretty wicked,” Seufert said. “I just came up from home and wasn’t here a couple minutes before the damage started happening. “ Seufert’s friend Jackie Blackgrow, Graphic Design Freshman, said she didn’t know how bad the wind was till she received a phone call from Seufert. “The only reason I knew how severe the wind damage had become was thanks to Meagan”  Blackgrow said. “She told me it was windy and her car was all over the road.  Then I looked out the window and saw the wind get increasingly worse.” The only inconvenience the dorm residents experienced was power outage.  The roofs held strong against the winds unlike the roofs of the Activities Building, Crestview or the Life Science building. “We were making cookies and the power kept going out which was the worst part for us,” Seufert said.  “I felt pretty safe in the dorms.” Blackgrow said she could not believe how easily trees were being destroyed not only by the wind but falling debris. “I saw trees being thrown around like they were nothing,” said Blackgrow. “I can’t believe the roof is laying in-between and smashing the trees next to Life Science.” Snip said the trees on campus were 50 to 60 years old and many were destroyed by the wind. “Unfortunately we have lost a lot of history today.”  Snip said.
