The IU Southeast Men’s Basketball team used three-point shooting to defeat Berea by a convincing score of 111-80. With the win the Grenadiers improved their record to (19-3, 13-0 in the KIAC).
The Grenadiers pulled away in the second half using smothering defense that wore down Berea College.
While IUS got off to a great shooting start in the first half, the Grenadiers coaching staff was not happy with the first half defense.
“There is no excuse for us to play defense like we did in the first half,” head coach Wiley Brown said. “We played great in the second half, but in our locker room at halftime our team wasn’t having much fun.”
In the second half the Grenadiers turned up the pressure and held Berea College to 31 percent shooting. Much improved from the 53 percent that Berea shot in the first half.
“I thought we were kind of awful in the first half,” Cameron Mitchell, senior guard, said. “We missed seven total layups.”
The Grenadiers were led in scoring by Aishon White, junior guard, who scored 18 of his 26 points in the first half. White finished seven of eleven from the field, six of seven from the three-point line and added three assist.
Kevin Mitchell, senior guard, tossed in 23 points, while making all five of his three-point attempts.
“Coach Brown got on us at half-time and we came out in the second half and played Grenadiers Basketball.” Cameron Mitchell, senior guard, said.
Cameron Mitchell led the team in rebounding with 10 and added eight points.
Kegan Clark, senior forward, was plagued with foul trouble, but still found a way to score 12 points.
“I just try to beat my opponent off the dribble and get to the basket,” Clark said. “I can’t worry about the officiating, they’re in charge.”
Berea College, (13-12, 6-8 KIAC) was led in scoring by Guard Seth Beckham who finished with 18 points and four rebounds in a losing effort.
The grenadiers will host I.U East on Saturday for homecoming at 4 p.m.
