Tommy Lasorda once said there are three types of baseball players: Those who make it happen, those who watch it happen and those who wonder what happens.
The Grenadiers made it happen this weekend. On Friday, game one, they won the first double header 14-4 and 7-1. Then on Saturday, senior day, they lost game one 6-5, but rebounded in game two with a 7-3 victory. The Grenadiers were (3-1) in back to back doubleheaders against Beria College, and improved to a (26-19, 11-9 in the KIAC).
In game one Alex Potter, went 3 of 4 with a career high four RBI and scored two runs. Kyle Rupe was 3 of 3 with three scored runs.
Greg Laughlin, freshman pitcher, pitched a complete game for his second win of the season. Laughlin gave up four runs on six hits; and he struck out three and walked three.
“I feel like I didn’t have my best stuff today, but my teammates came through a number of times and I was very grateful for that,” Laughlin said.
IU Southeast finished the game with 13 hits, five in the third inning and 6 in the sixth inning.
“I was out there praying the whole time, “please let me throw strikes,” Laughlin said.
Louis Helmburg, catcher/pitcher, said that as a team they fixed a number of issues during indoor. Helmburg, said that they have been hitting a lot better as a team, and that the team has started to come together at the right time.
“The coaches really worked with us on the things that we were are doing wrong, and it just all started clicking,” Helmburg said.
“The only thing we need to improve on is our pitchers coming in and throwing strikes right out the gate,” Helmberg said. “We need to just take dominance at the plate and just getting ahead at the count.”
In game two, the Grenadiers received another complete game pitching performance. Michael Fitzwater, junior pitcher, finished the game with one run on eight hits and struck out seven in a complete game win.
The Grenadiers took the lead in the first inning and never looked back. Marcus Howard walked and scored on a double by Rupe. Alex Potter, sophomore outfielder, hit a double that scored Kyle Rupe, junior pitcher, and a sacrifice fly by Josh Beams, freshman infielder, scored Potter to make it 3-0.
In the fourth inning Berea suffered an error by second baseman Ty Shipley that allowed 3 runs. The Grenadiers were successful, winning the game two 7-1.
