The IU Southeast men’s basketball team had little trouble against the Asbury Eagles on Homecoming Saturday afternoon. They disposed of Asbury 75-55 in the activities building.

The win put the Grenadiers at 8-15 overall and 5-7 in conference play.

The Grenadiers came in to the game, last place in the KIAC south, two games behind Alice Lloyd. In the KIAC, the last place team in each the north and south divisions, are eliminated from the conference tournament.

Despite the win early in the day, the Grenadiers were officially eliminated after Alice Lloyd defeated Brescia securing their spot in the tournament.

IU Southeast began the game shooting 0-5 from the field and committing two turnovers as the Eagles went on a 6-0 run to start the game.

The Grenadiers started getting things going offensively and freshman forward Joe Jackson, drained a three-pointer to give the Grenadiers their first lead of the game.

Jackson finished the game with 10 points and nine rebounds.

After some more scoring and great defensive plays, including a traditional three-point play by senior guard Kayman Garrett, the Grenadiers took a double digit lead.

The Grenadiers would lead at the end of the first half 38-23, holding Asbury to just 22 percent shooting in the first half.

IU Southeast kept their lead for most of the second half until Asbury started to make a comeback midway through the half.

The Eagles were able to come within six points of the Grenadiers, thanks in large part to two three-pointers by sophomore forward, Timmy Bradshaw.

The Grenadiers regrouped and Garrett made a three-pointer, which began a 13-0 run by IU Southeast.

Grenadiers head coach Wiley Brown said that the toughness of his team’s schedule helped his team to shake off Asbury’s comeback in the second half.

“The guys kept their head up, kept their composure, and they made plays.” Brown said.

Already up big, freshman guard Devon White would lob an alley oop to junior forward Jordan Thompson , who made a monstrous dunk.

Thompson also finished the game with 18 rebounds.

Senior guard Jake Simpson, led the way for the Grenadiers with 19 points and five assists.

“A lot our freshmen are starting to step up,” Simpson said.

Brown highlighted a stat that has plagued this team all season long. He pointed out that for the first time all season the Grenadiers had more assists than turnovers.

“They passed the ball when guys were open and they knocked down shots,” Brown said.

The Grenadiers may be eliminated from the postseason, but they have plenty left to play for in their last game of the year on senior night against the Cincinnati Christian Eagles. Tip off was originally scheduled for February 17., but has been moved to Thursday February 19. The tip off is scheduled for 8 p.m., 20 minutes after the IU Southeast women leave the floor in their last home game of the season.
