The IUS Women’s Basketball team defeated St. Catharine College for their first win of the season, 66-52, on Nov. 10 in the Activities Building.
The Grenadier’s home-opener was a game of defense and low-scoring by both teams.
The win brings the Grenadiers to 1-2 for the season.
“I was happy with a lot of areas tonight,” Robin Farris, IUS Women’s Basketball head coach, said. “Overall, we played as a team, played hard, and we didn’t put them on the free-throw line too much.”
Ashmere Woods, sophomore guard, led the Grenadiers with 16 points, five rebounds, two assists and three steals followed by Alden Krausse, senior forward, with 12 points, seven rebounds and five blocks.
Tia Wineinger, senior forward, added 10 points, seven rebounds and three steals for the night.
“Ashmere Woods was really effective, and I thought Tia Wineinger had a solid game also,” Farris said. “Alden Krausse’s defense down in the interior was really strong for us, and she blocked some shots when we needed her to.”
The Grenadiers’ defense held the Patriots to shooting 18 percent in the first half, and 29 percent for the game.
“We played team defense, which we really haven’t had yet,” Krausse said. “We talked, kept our hands up, kept moving, and we forced many turnovers and converted on those turnovers.”
The Grenadiers’ defense held the Patriots scoreless until more than six minutes went by in the first half. IU Southeast held their opponent to 15 points in the first half of the game.
“I thought we played a lot smarter, took better shots and our defense was a lot better,” Farris said.
The Grenadiers led the entire game and defeated the Patriots for their first win after dropping the first two games of the season.
“The game was very good,” Woods said. “We came out very strong after the first two losses, and we knew what we needed to improve on. That’s what we came out and did.”
The Grenadiers lost their first two games of the season against St. Francis on Nov. 5, and Goshen College on Nov. 6, in the St. Francis Tournament.
“Last weekend was tough,” Farris said. “I was proud of them and the way they bounced back with a lot of enthusiasm and determination.”
Whitney Duncan, senior guard, said she was happy with her team’s ability to push the ball and create scoring opportunities.
“We did very well running the ball, and that’s what we have been working on in practice,” Duncan said. “We came out, executed and were more patient with what we need to do.”
Along with eight points and five assists, Duncan had three steals, making her the career steals leader for IU Southeast with 263 steals, surpassing Laura Donlon’s 262 steals set back in 1981-1985.
With their first win under their belt, Duncan said the team is looking forward to another successful season coming up this year.
“I am looking forward to winning the KIAC championship again, having a winning season and having fun,” Duncan said.
The Grenadiers’ next game will be Nov. 16, against Indiana Wesleyan University at 7 p.m. in the Activities Building.
