Reports to sports: Journalism grad offers advice

While his first career choice was computer programming, his passion became sports journalism. An unplanned turn of events led Drew Nichter, news director for The Weekly Recorder, from fixing minor computer problems and fielding help desk calls, to managing a weekly newspaper based in Louisville. Nichter is responsible for the weekly production of the paper, as well as writing, editing, photography, story selection, layout and design. The Weekly Recorder focuses on news and feature articles for Baptists in Kentucky, as well as across the U.S.

IUS contemplates waitlist expansion

Due to the recent campus enrollment increase this semester, some students signed up for a waitlist when registering for their classes. However, IU Southeast is looking to expand the waitlist for future semesters. Brittany Hubbard, director of Financial Aid and interim director of the Academic Success Center, said when the waitlist program was first implemented, it was very successful.

Cuba summer course seeks study abroad students

A new course — Cuba in Transition: A Study Abroad Program — will be taught and led by Cliff Staten, professor of political science and international studies, during summer session 1 in 2012. The class is a six-week course from June 1 to 18, 2012 —three weeks in the classroom and three weeks traveling in Cuba. The group will also meet up with students from Spring Hill College. Staten said 14 students have applied for the course and there are still openings. Interviews will be conducted in early October.
