Mark Bickers, biology senior, will be graduating this December after being a college student for only three and a half years. Bickers is one of three students who received the 2010 Chancellor’s Medallion Leadership Scholarship. David Taylor, professor of biology, said the scholarship honors outstanding students who make commitments to leadership.

Counselor seeks to help students

This past year, more teens have committed suicide due to bullying, but Michael Day, IUS personal counselor, wants to change that. Day said, according to research, suicide is linked to hopeless feelings. “We also find that those who attempt suicide usually do not want to die,” Day said. “Rather, they want the pain to end. That is why it is so important to reach out to individuals who are feeling this way and to work to end bullying.”

High school senior now member of SGA

Bronson Bast is an 18-year-old home-schooled high school senior attending IU Southeast for dual credit. He also recently became a senator for the Student Government Association. Bast said those who are home-schooled are often stereotyped. “People have a general perception that since your mom is teaching you and all your classes are at home that you have no social life,” Bast said. “That is true in some cases, but for me, the experience has been different. I’ve had the opportunity to take classes outside of the home setting, whether it is college courses or my friend’s mom teaching a class or two.

Former skinhead speaks on campus

Frank Meeink, author of “Autobiography of a Recovering Skinhead,” spoke at IU Southeast on Sept. 29 in the Hoosier Room. He discussed his life story — from his childhood to becoming a leader in the skinhead community along with his prison experiences. Meeink began his speech by warning everyone he would curse and possibly offend others’ beliefs of God.

New SGA senator advocate for LGBT Kentuckians

Yana Baker, political science freshman, is a new member of the Student Government Association. Baker was sworn in as a full senator on Sept. 30. Erick Marquez, communications junior and secretary for the SGA, was her mentor during her probationary period before she was sworn in. He said he enjoyed mentoring Baker.

Passion for film reflects in career

Tracy Heightchew, Box Office supervisor of the Ogle Center, said she is happy with her life and career. Heightchew has been working at the Ogle Center since January 2009. “I am in charge of all ticket sales, house management and scheduling,” Heightchew said. “I work with campus groups, touring artists and particularly, the music and theatre departments.”

Professor’s job doesn’t pay enough, goes back to school

Judy Cato, adjunct professor of religious studies, has taught at IU Southeast and Spalding University for more than 20 years. Cato recently went back to school for a nursing degree and is attending Galen College of Nursing in Louisville. “I will graduate with my [registered nurse degree] in March 2012,” Cato said. “I chose Galen over a school like IUS, Spalding, Bellarmine or U of L because it’s fast.”

New CIO expects changes

From having many years of experience in the field of technology to raising four daughters with his wife of 40 years, Tom Sawyer, chief information officer, said he feels right at home in his new position at IU Southeast. “The environment here is just conducive to learning,” Sawyer said. “I love the way [the faculty] care about the students. It makes me feel good, like we’re doing something right.” Sawyer said his job consists of taking care of the technology needs of the university.

New dean anticipates changes for Social Sciences

Joe Wert, the new dean of the School of Social Sciences, was recently promoted to his new position as dean. He took office on Aug. 2. Due to his previous administrative experience, Wert decided to take the position as dean. “I was the coordinator of the Political Science Department for about seven years,” Wert said. “I was also a part of the faculty senate for two years. I like that kind of role and the abilities I have to be of service to the School of Social Sciences.

Art facility being built on top of Clark-Floyd Landfill
