The IUS baseball team defeated Taylor University in the first game of a doubleheader on March 6 at the Koetter Sports Baseball Complex by a score of 9-4.
After losing their first five games, the Grenadiers have now ripped off six in a row. This is the first of a four game series with Taylor University.
Kris Eschman, junior pitcher, got the start for the Grenadiers.
Eschman gave up one run each in the second and third inning, including a home run.
He then settled into three scoreless innings of work allowing only one hit and no walks.
Eschman worked a complete game allowing the bullpen to get rest for the remainder of this four game series.
Head coach Ben Reel said he was pleased with his team’s effort.
“We played as close to a perfect game as we could since I have been here,” Reel said. “Eschman was throwing strikes, our defense was solid and our situational hitting was outstanding.”
The Grenadiers scored three runs each in the second, fifth and sixth innings. The Trojans were able to add two runs late but the Grenadiers were able to hold on and win 9-4.
Kyle Gould, Taylor University head coach, said he respected the effort of Eschman.
“I give their pitcher credit, we came into this game swinging the bats really well,” Gould said. “They played well and kept us off balance.”
This game marked the Grenadiers sixth win in a row overall and improves their record to 6-5.
