The Student Government Association meeting on April 9 started with an apology to Channell Barbour, associate director of Campus Life.
James Bonsall, SGA president, apologized to Barbour for the executive session of the April 2 meeting running so long. The extended session prevented her from addressing the senate at the meeting. Barbour had been invited to speak to the SGA about current issues on campus.
“No other action needs to be taken,” Barbour said. “This was a learning experience. We have to work together and need to be aware of each other in the future.”
Amanda Denbo, SGA vice president, said discussion in the SGA’s offices needed to be kept more professional and the grapevine of bad information needs to stop.
“We don’t need to be bashing and putting each other down.” Denbo said. “We are here for the students and we need to work as a team.”
Denbo also suggested SGA meetings in the summer semesters.
In new business, Ben Taylor, SGA senate chair, proposed the formation of a committee to review the SGA constitution and bylaws. The committee would go through the SGA constitution and bylaws to find any discrepancies and fix them. After a brief discussion the committee was approved.
The Snacks and Water for Campus Beautification Volunteers Bill was approved after being passed into emergency status. The bill allots $50 for snacks and bottled water for volunteers that participate in the Campus Beautification Day on April 15.
Seuth Chaleunphonh, dean of Student Life, said Food Services would be at the April 16 meeting. Food Services conducted a survey asking the student body’s opinion about the quality of dining services.
In other business, two probationary senators were added, Leslie Drury, psychology junior, and Nick Selvage, geosciences freshman. Flo Gonya resigned as senate secretary and Jonathan Moody, SGA senator, was elected to fill the position.
Bonsall said he would be meeting with Chancellor Sandra Patterson-Randles and Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs Ruth Garvey-Nix about a new adviser, because Greg Roberts, academic adviser, is at the end of his advising term.
Bonsall also encouraged SGA members to participate in the upcoming events: Campus Beautification April 15, Barricade of Boxes April 15, Student Diversity Town Hall Meeting April 16, Five Guys Burger and Fries April 22, and the Board of Trustees meeting May 6 and 7.
The Five Guys Burger and Fries will be giving 10 percent of all sales on April 22 for the campus’ recycling effort.
