Spiffy people dressed in black and white sit on stage tuning their instruments and waiting for the lights to dim and the conductor to make her presence on stage.

On Sunday April 26 at 3 p.m., the IU Southeast Orchestra preformed their last regular season concert. The performance consisted of four songs and they featured a solo piano player. The concert was held in the Richard K. Stem Concert Hall.

The pianist was a man named Ryan Marsh, who is a senior at IU Southeast and is graduating with a Bachelor of Arts in music. His degree concentrations are sound engineering and piano performance.

Marsh has been playing the piano for 18 years and started playing at the young age of four. His solo piece was during the song Rhapsody in Blue by George Gershwin.

Marsh said this was his first time performing a solo piece for the IU Southeast Orchestra.

“I had a blast. The response from the crowd was encouraging and everyone played well together,” Marsh said.

When the Gershwin song ended the audience stood up and cheered for the performance.

After the show, people flooded towards Marsh giving him words of encouragement.

Frank Kelley, attendee, said “the piano player was outstanding, it was a good performance.”

Matthew Haddock, attendee, said “Ryan was talented and you could tell he wanted to play the piece.”

Haddock said that the overall performance by the orchestra was great and full of energy.

“For a nonprofessional group they sounded fantastic,“ attendee Judy Blackwell said.

While this is the last seasonal performance the IU Southeast Orchestra will be performing at the IU Southeast Concert Band Summer Pops on June 12.
