A dance clinic was hosted by the Red Edition Dance Team on Sunday, Sept. 27, in the Activities Building.
Local elementary, middle and high school students were invited to learn dance routines that they performed on Saturday, Oct. 3, for the Harvest Homecoming Parade in New Albany.
The clinic consisted of a two-hour session where the participants learned a walking routine for the parade route and a short dance routine that they performed for the parade judges.
The parade was not the only chance the participants got to show off their hard work.
“This year for the Fall Festival here they actually asked us to come and perform” Lori Carmichael-Shields, Red Edition coach, said.
The four members of the Red Edition dance team include Tara Shields, general studies sophomore, Lindsey Black, nursing sophomore, Missy Gourieux, psychology freshman, and Britanny Davis, biology freshman. They each taught a separate routine to the participants.
The participants were divided into four age groups making the learning process faster.
The Red Edition members each took a group and taught their individual routine, then they would rotate to the next group.
“It’s one thing when you teach a college team,” Gourieux said. “But it’s another when your teaching younger kids who don’t pay attention, or don’t get it or know what the steps are.”
The Red Edition members agreed the participants did a good job for the short time they had together.
“I heard one mom say ‘I can’t believe how much they learned in two hours,’” Black said.
One of the participants, Aleiah Kessler, second-grader from Green Valley Elementary School, told a Red Edition Dance Team member she had fun.
Kessler is the little sister of Joshua Hall, secondary education sophomore.
The cost of the clinic was $25, however the price was $20 for the participants that registered before deadline.
Carmichael-Shields said funds raised from the clinic will go toward uniforms, coaches’ fees and other
expenses.
