The IUS volleyball team defeated Brescia University on Oct. 6, in the Activities Building.
The Grenadiers swept the match, winning 25-14, 25-15 and 25-13.
The win was the fifth in a row for the Grenadiers, moving their record to 11-7 and 2-0 in the Kentucky Intercollegiate Athletic Conference.
The loss dropped Brescia to 2-10 overall and 2-3 in the KIAC.
Lesley Drury-Prather, head coach of the Grenadiers, said she felt the team is playing well.
“We are learning every day, which is awesome for me as a coach,” she said. “I feel like we are improving every day and hopefully we will keep getting better and better.”
Drury-Prather said Lindsey Rumph, sophomore libero and defensive specialist, had an injury that kept her out of the game.
Rumph leads the Grenadiers in average digs per game with 3.5.
Lauren McCartin, sophomore defensive specialist and libero, who is second on the team in digs per game, averaging 3.3 per contest, stepped up in Rumph’s absence and led the Grenadiers with 15 digs.
Stacey Flatt, senior setter led IU Southeast with 38 assists and she also served one ace. Flatt has 21 service aces on the season the lead the Grenadiers.
Lindsey Maymon, freshman outside hitter, had 14 kills and Shirley Roxanne Acree, freshman outside hitter added 12 kills to lead the way for IU Southeast.
“We really stepped up and people kind of took charge in roles they weren’t used to playing,” Drury-Prather.
Traci Smith, Brescia head coach, said she felt everybody and everything was off.
“I thought we played very lackadaisical,” she said.
IU Southeast was not the only team to have an injury that hurt the team.
Tiffany Allen, Brescia freshman setter, missed the game with a major injury to her shoulder blade.
Allen is the Bearcats’ leader in assists, averaging 6.5 per game.
“It hurts when you’ve got to replace an important person,” Smith said.
Smith said the Bearcats did not play solid fundamental volleyball.
“I really don’t think we’ve hit our potential,” she said. “We are hit and miss and we just haven’t put it all together yet.”
IU Southeast will return home on Oct. 14 for a match against Spalding.
