The IUS volleyball team lost its match against Spalding University 3-1 on Wednesday, Oct. 14, in the Activities Building.
The Grenadiers lost to the Golden Eagles by a score of 25-21 in the first game, 27-25 in the second and 25-23 in the fourth set. The Grenadiers won the third game 26-24.
The loss comes after two wins in a row. The IUS volleyball team’s overall record currently stands at 14-9.
Vanessa Stauble, senior middle blocker, said she was disappointed in the Grenadiers’ performance.
“Staying in base was a big deal for us,” Stauble said. “Spalding is like our biggest rival.”
However, Stauble led the Grenadiers with 16 of the team’s 43 total kills. Shirley Acree, freshman outside hitter, added 11 kills.
Stauble also added two solo blocks and four digs. Acree added two digs, as well.
Spalding had a team hitting percentage of .231 for the match. Spalding’s record is 19-4, and they have won five straight.
Paige Dellis, Spalding sophomore outside hitter, led Spalding with 12 kills on the night while Alex Marquardt, Spalding sophomore middle hitter, was busy tallying 32 attacks and 6 blocks.
Bridget Yates, Spalding head coach, said her team took advantage of IU Southeast.
“We kept their middle from being effective,” Yates said. “Hitting the line tonight worked out great. We took advantage of IUS not covering the line.”
Leslie Drury-Prather, head coach of the Grenadiers, said she agreed.
“Our defense didn’t cover the line at all,” Drury-Prather said. “We let them come in and we didn’t stop them. We didn’t have any fight.”
The Grenadiers didn’t hold off the serves of Spalding. The Golden Eagles out-served the Grenadiers with 11 total service aces.
One disadvantage in covering the line was Lindsey Rumph, sophomore libero and defensive specialist, had an injury that kept her out of the game.
Lauren McCartin, sophomore libero and defensive specialist, stepped up with 19 defensive digs.
Stacey Flatt, senior setter, led IU Southeast with 35 assists out of the total 38 assists.
Acree also led in number of total attempts with 35, followed by Lindsey Maymon, freshman outside hitter, with 29 total attempts and Stauble with 28.
The yearly series between IU Southeast and Spalding is now split. The Grenadiers previously defeated Spaleing 3-1 in their game Sept. 9.
“Tonight, we just came out flat and couldn’t get out of it,” Stauble said.
