The smell of coffee fills the air while students walk into the campus gym early in the morning. Some look tired, but they are still there trying to start their day in a better way. Even though college life is usually busy and stressful, a lot of students are trying to build healthier habits. College is often connected with late nights, fast food and stress, but that is not the full story. Many students are starting to focus more on their health, even if it is just small changes. For most people, it is not about being perfect, it is just about doing a little better when they can.
Junior Maya Thompson said she had to change how she thought about working out. “I used to think I had to go really hard every time, but now I just try to be consistent,” she said. “Even if I only go for a short time, it still helps me feel better.” Campus wellness coordinator David Greene said more students are starting to think this way. He explained that students are realizing how much exercise can help with stress. “We are seeing more students come in just to clear their minds,” Greene said. “It is not only about working out anymore.”
Around campus, students all do different things to stay active. Some go to the gym, some walk more between classes, and others join sports or workout classes. There is not just one way to stay healthy, and that makes it easier for
students to find what works for them. Food is another big part of it. In the dining hall, there are a lot of choices, and not all of them are healthy. Sophomore Alex Nguyen said he is trying to do a better job with what he eats. “I still eat junk food sometimes, but I try to mix in better options,” he said. “I have been drinking more water too.” Nutrition specialist Laura Perez said she has noticed students paying more attention. “Students are starting to care more about what they eat,” Perez said. “They want to feel better during the day.” Sleep is still something a lot of students struggle with. Between homework, jobs and hanging out with friends, it is hard to get enough rest. Senior Jordan Miller said getting more sleep helped him a lot. “I started going to bed earlier and I feel way better,” he said. “I am not as tired in class anymore.” At the end of the day, being healthy in college is not easy, but it is possible. Small things like working out a little, eating a bit better and getting more sleep can make a difference. Most students are just trying to do what they can.
