On Wednesday, Feb. 3, the No. 4-ranked IUS men’s basketball team defeated visiting Brescia University 91-63.
The Grenadiers started slow, trailing the Brescia Bearcats for most of the first half. Then, with only three minutes left in the half, the Grenadiers took their first lead of the game at 30-29 and never looked back.
The Grenadiers led 41-34 at the half.
“We knew that they were going to play tough,” Carlos Mitchell, IUS senior guard, said.
Wiley Brown, IUS head coach, warned his players about Brescia’s good shooting and told his team to play tough man-to-man defense.
“When we play defense, we are going to win,” Brown said. “That’s our key to success.”
Jazzmarr Ferguson, IUS junior guard, was the leading scorer for the Grenadiers with a game-high 23 points. He added three rebounds and two assists. Brice Mitchell, IUS freshman forward, and George White, IUS senior guard, scored 14 points each. Carlos Mitchell recorded a double-double, scoring 13 points and pulling down 11 rebounds. Rick Bodiford, IUS junior guard, added 12 points and nine rebounds.
Anthony Ingram, Brescia senior forward, scored 18 points, grabbed 10 rebounds and had a game-high six blocked shots for the Bearcats.
Andrew Howard, Brescia senior guard, added 15 points and five rebounds. Bryce Garrett, Brescia sophomore forward guard, rounded out the Bearcats’ scorers in double figures with 10 points.
During the first few minutes of the second half, the game began to get chippy. Ingram and Aaron Tandy, Brescia junior guard, were each called for technical fouls.
With 15:09 remaining in the game Andre Sharp, Brescia freshman guard, and George White, IUS senior guard, were each assessed a technical foul.
The Grenadiers dominated the second half, outscoring Brescia 50-29.
IU Southeast outrebounded the Bearcats 45-36 for the game. The Grenadiers’ pressure defense led to 20 turnovers for Brescia, while IU Southeast only turned the ball over nine times.
“The better team won tonight,” Joe Pechota, Brescia head coach, said.
