Tuesday, Feb. 9, was a day of snowmen and sleeping in for many IUS students. However, the snow day meant much more for campus organizations that had to cancel events due to the closing.
One event was the Volunteer and Internship Fair sponsored by Campus Life and Career Services. The event was to be held Feb. 9 from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. in the Hoosier Room, and will now be held Thursday, March 11, at the same time and location.
Originally, 35 agencies were attending the fair, and, so far, only 12 have responded to the reschedule date.
However, Rosie Shannon, internship coordinator, said she remains optimistic about attendance from agencies and students.
“I encourage all students to attend because volunteering is not only a way to give back to the community, but also a great way to learn skills, build a résumé and make contacts with people in their field for the future,” Shannon said.
Another event cancelation was for College Day Out, a day where Jefferson County Public School eighth graders visit area colleges.
Approximately eight middle schools are involved, including students from Thomas Jefferson Middle School that would have visited IU Southeast if it were open.
The Office of Admissions plans to reschedule this event, but a specific date has not been set.
The Brown Bag Lunch Series on Diversity, hosted by the Adult Student Center in collaboration with the IUS Library, was also cancelled on Feb. 9.
Although no date has been set, Kim Pelle, Adult Student Center coordinator, said she is optimistic about a reschedule.
“We are hoping to reschedule because I think a lot of people were looking forward to hearing Constant Merritt read poetry,” Pelle said.
Merritt — author of three poem collections, winner of the Vassar Miller Prize in Poetry and finalist for both the William Carlos Williams and Library of Virginia Book Award — was to be the event’s guest speaker.
