The IUS men’s tennis team defeated visiting Kentucky Intercollegiate Athletic Conference opponent Asbury College 7-2 on April 1.

The Grenadiers faced off against Asbury University in three doubles matches and six singles matches. The Grenadiers won two of the three doubles matches and five of the six singles matches.

Matt Coomer, Spanish junior, and No. 1 singles and doubles player for the Grenadiers, said his team executed their game plan very well against Asbury.

“I felt like we played really solid today,” Coomer said. “We were able to play consistent during our single matches to win against Asbury.”

Coomer won his doubles match playing along with teammate Kevin Sacksteder, tennis sophomore, and also won his No. 1 singles match.

Though Coomer was pleased with his team’s win against Asbury, he also sees areas his team can work on before their next match.

“We need to work on our doubles team work,” Coomer said. “We are still trying to figure out who will be on what doubles team but we need to keep improving.”

Adam Denney, IUS No. 2 singles and doubles player, said his matches against Asbury were tough. Denney won his singles match but lost his doubles match. Freshman Nathan Cross was Denney’s doubles partner.

“We came out flat in our doubles match, so I tried to pick it up in my singles match,” Denney said.

Though Denney lost his doubles match, he was pleased with his play and considered his play to be better than it had been lately.

Coomer, who was in total control of his opponent in his singles match, winning in the first two sets, said he was pleased with how he played against Asbury.

“I felt like I hit a lot of balls in play and was serving well today,” Coomer said.

The Grenadiers had lost their last time out against KIAC opponent Brescia University 2-7.

With the win against Asbury the Grenadiers improved their record on the season to 3-2 and 3-1 in the KIAC.

The men’s tennis team’s next home game is on April 20 against Oakland City.
