The IUS Women’s Basketball team had its first scrimmage of the season against visiting Vincennes University on Oct. 20 in the Activities Building.
The scrimmage consisted of two 20-minute halves, with a five-minute halftime.
Vincennes University won both halves by a score of 38-22 in the first half and 42-30 in the second half of the scrimmage.
“It is early in the season, and we have only been practicing a couple of weeks,” Robin Farris, IUS Women’s Basketball head coach, said. “It was an awfully talented team we played against, and it was a good early-season test.”
Farris said the Lady Trailblazers were a tough team that was big, fast and talented.
“Vincennes is a junior college, and there are probably five or six girls that will go on to play at the division-one level,” Farris said. “I thought it was a good experience, and you learn something from it.”
Robin Deckard, freshman guard, said her first college scrimmage was an intense learning experience.
“The scrimmage showed us our weaknesses, and it helped show what we need to work on,” Deckard said. “We need a lot of work and a lot of practice.”
The Grenadiers’ roster consists of eight returning upperclassmen and two freshmen for the 2010-11 season.
“We have six seniors, and I think they understand what needs to be done,” Farris said. “They have to work harder in practice, keep a positive attitude, and it will probably all happen.”
Alden Krausse, senior forward, said working on the fundamentals is going to be the key to the Grenadiers success this upcoming season.
“We need to become more efficient in running our plays, be more aggressive and we need to reduce our turnovers dramatically,” Krausse said.
With only a few weeks of practice behind them, Farris said he was happy with the scrimmage and how his team played overall.
“We have been practicing for two weeks against each other every day, and it gave them a change to go against somebody else,” Farris said
Lauren Brim, senior guard and forward, said she was happy about the scrimmage and her team’s performance.
“I think that we looked pretty good, but we have got some things that we need to iron out,” Brim said. “I think that whenever we get in a little bit more practice, we will be good.”
Whitney Duncan, senior point guard, said the scrimmage was a good opportunity for the Grenadiers to learn more and fix some problems that need work.
“The scrimmage was good practice playing against potential division one players,” Duncan said. “It showed us where we are at as a team and what we need to work on.”
The Grenadiers have won the Kentucky Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Tournament two years in a row, and Farris said he is confident in his team’s chances to win a third straight this season.
“I think we have a very good chance to win the conference and go to the national tournament again,” Farris said. “We should be battling for that conference championship, and another birth to the national tournament is certainly reachable.”
