At many of the recent Student Government Association meetings, one of the most pressing issues was the possible impeachment of the SGA president, Amanda Denbo.
After several meetings to discuss impeachment, Denbo will maintain her current post despite the impeachment proceedings.
After the first spring semester meeting, the SGA moved forward to impeach her. However, the following week they came to a resolution, insuring Denbo would maintain her post though not without certain sanctions inhibiting her current authority.
The entire process of impeachment was brought forward as a result of allegations that Denbo was not performing her job as SGA president. Denbo said some of the allegations of neglect on her part were in indeed true.
However, she said the rest of the SGA members were able to reach a compromise with her.
“We came to an agreement,” Denbo said. “Basically, there were sanctions against what I will be allowed to do for a while, and then those sanctions will eventually be lifted.”
Tristan Williamson, SGA vice president, said the process had its merits.
“This whole thing was just to send a message,” Williamson said.
Her removal as SGA president would have required two-thirds of the vote of the entire body.
“I want people to be better leaders by learning from my mistakes,” Denbo said.
The position of SGA president is a paid position.
Denbo will be graduating in May from IU Southeast with a bachelor’s degree in business management.
New elections for the SGA President and other members of the student body will commence in April.
Denbo said she will no longer be a member of the student body after these elections take place.
She is currently taking one credit hour in dancing and currently works part-time at Chase Bank.
Denbo has been the SGA president since the fall of 2010.
