The IUS intramural basketball league got under way on Jan. 30 with 12 games.
The games ran from 8 a.m. until the final game concluded just before 8 p.m.
The league will continue on a weekly basis through March 20.
This year’s league features two men’s leagues of 37 total teams and one women’s league with three teams.
The men’s teams were divided into a NBA league with 16 teams in four divisions: North, South, East and West; and the NCAA league that has 21 teams in five divisions — ACC, Big East, SEC, Big XII and Sun Belt.
Perry Brown, intramural and fitness coordinator, said the teams were divided into the leagues based on competition level.
“The NBA is the most competitive league for a lot of players that play in the other leagues around the community,” Brown said. “The NCAA is like a recreational league where you just want to have fun, just get in shape and play around with your friends.”
Brown said this year’s league is the biggest ever.
“We have 37 total men’s teams and three women’s teams this year,” Brown said. “We are at our capacity, so that’s why we’ve got a lot of games, and we’re playing them all day.”
Brown also said the league has grown progressively bigger every year since he took over.
“So I guess we’re doing something right if it keeps growing,” Brown said.
Ryan Miller, team captain for the “Bros.” team from the NCAA Big East division, was on one of the teams to get a win by a large margin on the first day of competition.
“We won by 30, mercy rule,” Miller said.
Miller’s team is made up of a variety of people from school instead of just one group, such as a fraternity.
“A couple of us are TKEs, and then some of them are a couple others that we know from work or school or places like that,” Miller said.
The basketball league is just one of the intramural events happening right now.
Other intramural events happening in the next month include a Xbox 360 football challenge on Feb. 7 and wiffle ball tournament.
