Trend Design hair salon was invited to campus on Wednesday, Oct. 16, by Brittany Perez, English senior and community adviser, to support breast cancer awareness by putting pink hair extensions in any willing person’s hair.
The extensions cost $10 each and were either a dark or light shade of pink. They took about five minutes to apply. Most were easily disguised in hair or beards.
For the few that chose not to go pink, the salon also provided T-shirts for $10 as well.
Every year Trend Design provides the pink extensions and shirts to the public to raise money. Last year they raised about $3,800.
“We have raised about $2,700 this year. Tomorrow we have a big event at Heartland Payment Systems from noon to 4 p.m., but after today it should be over $3,000. The great thing about this is it all goes toward the cause,” Diane Henley, Trend Design co-owner and stylist, said.
All proceeds go to the American Cancer Society to support breast cancer research.
With a steady stream of willing students, the day’s donations totaled $710.
“One of my residents suggested the idea,” Perez said. “I thought it was a fun way to raise money for a cause and besides, who doesn’t like pink hair extensions?”
Trend Design is considering returning to IU Southeast again later this month to offer hair extensions and shirts to students that may have missed their opportunity this time.
“We’ll come back as long as we’re welcome,” Henley said.
