The IUS volleyball team cruised to an easy 3-0 victory at home over Midway College on Oct. 14, 25-15, 25-9, 25-16.
The first game was competitive early, as the visiting Eagles rallied to tie the score at 10. The Grenadiers then went on a 15-5 run, capitalizing on Midway mistakes to take the game 25-15. The Eagles finished the match with 22 errors.
IUS coach Carrie Lilly said it was tough to keep the team focused, particularly since they had already faced Midway four days prior and won handily.
“It’s good to play a lower-level team now and again,” Lilly said. “It’s good to have a “w”.”
The second game was more of the same, with IU Southeast racing ahead 3-0 en route to a 25-9 victory.
“They weren’t very good,” junior middle hitter Vanessa Stauble said. “We kind of knew what we were getting into.”
Despite sloppy play throughout the third game, the Grenadiers finished strong with a 25-16 win to take the game and the match.
“We did let up a little the last game,” Lilly said. “We gave them five points on serve.”
The Grenadiers finished with 30 kills and only six errors, but had 10 errors on serve.
“We play down to our competition a lot,” Stauble said.
Lilly said the win was good for team morale and the team played relaxed.
The Grenadiers improved to 7-14 and 3-3 in conference play while Midway College dropped to 2-11 and 1-4.
“I do like it when they’re having fun,” Lilly said. “Sometimes they get too serious and down on themselves and don’t play well.”
