The Student Government Association held its State of the Student Body Address on Oct. 27 in The Commons at noon, where Josh Kornberg, communications senior and SGA president, discussed a range of topics.
Kevin Evans, secondary education junior and SGA vice president, said the event started a little late because of some of the sponsors, and the cheerleaders were running behind.
“Chick-fil-A is going to have their cow here,” Evans said. “We’re waiting for the dance team and the cheerleaders to show up, so we’re going to be slightly behind [schedule].”
Evans also said the SGA would be giving away water bottles and handing out surveys to the students in attendance.
“[The SGA] has been hard at work this semester,” Evans said.
In his speech, Kornberg talked about why this year was a big deal for the campus because it was IU Southeast’s 70th anniversary.
“The key word this year has been ‘change,’” Kornberg said. “We have over 100 student organizations on campus right now. I encourage all of the student body to get out there and get involved.”
Julia Lado, 18 and senior at Atherton High School in Louisville, said she enjoyed the presentation.
“I think it’s really cool,” Lado said. “If I go here, I would go to the SGA for help.”
Kornberg also discussed what the administration has been working on for the upcoming year.
“I want everyone to know the administration has been taking steps to lower text book costs,” Kornberg said. “They are also working on making another parking lot so parking is easier.”
Kornberg also talked about rising tuition costs and how the university is working to help lower the costs.
“Tuition here had a 5.5 percent increase this year,” Kornberg said. “To help out with that, both summer semesters’ tuition rate is being chopped by 25 percent.”
Kornberg challenged all students at IU Southeast to use this campus as more than a place to get educated.
“Become an innovator on our campus,” Kornberg said. “Use this campus to gather experience, not just smarts.”
Stephen Prather, radiography junior and SGA senate pro-tempore, said he thought the address went well.
“It turned out really well,” Prather said. “However, we could have done a better job advertising it.”
Kornberg said he was happy with how the address went.
“[The SGA has] been working really hard this semester and things went really well,” Kornberg said.
