The Student Government Association held its meeting on Nov. 3 by talking about the syllabus proposal that was taken to the Student Recruitment and Retention Committee on Oct. 30.
The syllabus proposal would give faculty the means to put a syllabus onto OneStart before classes begin and encourage them to use the utility.
Jay McTyier, program analyst for the Registrar, talked about how IU Southeast is technologically prepared to set up the proposal.
“The professors aren’t ready to have their syllabus online when the students register for classes,” McTyier said. “So, to fix that, the utility added a search box that allows you to search the description of the course, so you know whether it’s going to be easy or if you’re going to have to bust your balls.”
McTyier said professors will be motivated to put their syllabuses on OneStart.
Josh Kornberg, communications senior and SGA president, issued an executive order to the senators to have students fill out surveys that would assess their professors’ use of OnCourse.
The executive order also said each senator needed to gather an additional 100 signatures from students.
“The signatures are for support from the student body for the syllabus proposal,” Kornberg said.
Matt Owen, political science junior and SGA senate chair, said the committee nominated four new probationary senators.
“We are doing their probationary period a little different this time,” Owen said. “Instead of assigning each of them a mentor, they will be put into one group with Jennifer Broadus [general studies junior and SGA treasurer].”
The four probationary senators are Drew Apple, criminal justice and political science sophomore, Shanda Webb, special education freshman, Micaela Dale, business management and marketing junior, and Ashley Kern, secondary education freshman.
Broadus said she is excited to work with them.
“I can’t wait to see how this new set up will work,” Broadus said. “We haven’t done it as one big team before. I think it’ll be great.”
Broadus said there will be some allocation bills coming out in the next few weeks.
“We talked about ways we can spend our budget the next few weeks,” Broadus said. “I would also like to ask that each senator sit down and think about something big we can do for the campus.”
Owen said there were a few housekeeping issues that needed to stop.
“In the last week, we have been a little lax on our policies,” Owen said. “When [SGA members are] in the office, they can’t have guests in it. I was doing it, and that’s how I noticed others were, as well.”
At the SGA meeting on Nov. 10, they listed everything they have completed or started since the start of their term in May.
When they started the year, they rebranded the organization and gave it a new logo and slogan.
“The rebranding is mostly finished,” Kornberg said. “We just need to get the website rebranded and looking more professional.”
Kornberg said he is currently working on some projects with Joe Glover, athletic director, about ways the SGA can help out the Athletics Department.
“I have been working with them to try and get students to show up to games and events,” Kornberg said. “We need to try and push students to get involved.”
Dulguun Otgonsuren, undecided sophomore and SGA treasurer, said he had been working on getting the design for the bulletin board ready for print.
Kornberg said he was really happy with the way it looked.
A couple of the senators took time out of the meeting to congratulate Owen on his recent victory in Jeffersonville — he won a city council at-large spot.
“It was a proud day in Jeffersonville Tuesday,” Stephon Moore, journalism freshman and SGA press secretary, said. “Congratulations Owen. It was a victory for the city, as well as you.”
