Students poured into the bleachers for a scrimmage game on Oct. 24 to get a glimpse of what to expect from the IUS women’s basketball team this season.
The Lady Grenadiers played Vincennes University in a scrimmage game that was scored in two separate games.
IUS women’s basketball head coach Robin Farris said he thought the team played outstanding because of their defense and communication.
“I was really pleased with the defensive intensity and the communication and the overall team effort in defense,” Farris said. “We forced 31 turn overs, and that’s a lot in a game.”
IU Southeast won both of the games. The first win came with a fight, coming out just barely ahead by one point, with a score of 31-30.
IU Southeast brought home the second game, with a 40-23 win.
Farris said Kortney Woods, senior forward, and Ashmere Woods, senior guard, played particularly well.
“Kortney Woods was seven to nine from the field head and had 18 points and six rebounds,” Farris said. “Ashmere Woods had eight rebounds. Those two played as well as anybody for us. I was really pleased with those two. “
Farris said he believes the team has a lot of potential.
“If we stay healthy, it’s going to be a fun team,” Farris said. “We have a lot of speed. We can get out on the fast break and score quickly off of steals, rebounds and block shots.”
Farris said scrimmage games will help the players adjust and get a feel for the game.
“We try some different combinations and see who plays well with who and give them all a chance to play with different people,” Farris said.
According to the IU Southeast Athletics website, the Lady Grenadiers were picked to finish first in the annual Kentucky Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Coaches’ Poll with seven first place votes and 78 total points.
The Lady Grenadiers will play their first home game against Saint Mary-of-the-Woods on Nov. 16 in the Activities Building.
