The IUS women’s basketball team started out strong against Asbury, on Thursday, Feb. 12, and won 67-43 in the Activities Building.
“It was a convincing win,” Robin Farris, IUS head coach, said. “It was a real confidence builder.”
This was the Grenadiers’ third win in a row.
Farris said the team showed a lot of hustle and did a better job of grabbing offensive rebounds and steals.
The Grenadiers had 14 steals by the end of the game and 11 offensive rebounds.
One thing Farris said the team could work on was limiting their turnovers. They turned the ball over 15 times for the game.
Farris said he would like to see the turnovers limited to no more than 10 to 12 a game.
Despite the turnovers, Farris said he was glad the team’s shooting percentage was 44 percent.
“That’s higher then we have been making,” Farris said.
Farris said he was pleased with the team’s effort.
“It was one of the better games,” Farris said.
The Grenadier women’s basketball team improved its record to 6-0 in the Kentucky Intercollegiate Athletic Conference and 14-8 overall.
Andrea Chambers, senior forward, said the team’s goal is to be undefeated in the conference.
Chambers scored 19 points for the game against Asbury.
“We need [Chambers] to score,” Farris said. He said many of the teams they play try to shut her down.
Some players were sick during Thursday’s game. Chambers was one of them.
“Actually, I play better when I am sick,” Chambers said.
She said it makes her concentrate more.
Chambers said Morgan Hunsaker, sophomore guard, was under the weather as well and hopes they can keep from passing it on to any of the other players.
During the game Hunsaker was screened by one of the Asbury players and was laid flat on the court. The game was stopped for a short time to make sure she was OK. Hunsaker was fine. She got up and walked off the court.
Chambers said that happens sometimes when the screen isn’t called.
The head coach of Asbury, Bart Flener, said IU Southeast played well.
“They have good defense and they can move the ball,” Flener said. “It’s a testament to their defense.”
The Asbury basketball team has nine freshmen this year. Flener said he was excited about his team’s future with them.
“They hit a wall a little bit,” Flener said. “They couldn’t find their energy source.”
Flener was disappointed with the fact that his team shot such a low percentage. He said they had been shooting 60 percent. They shot 29 percent against IU Southeast.
This was not the first time the Grenadiers and Asbury have played against each other this season. The Grenadiers defeated Asbury 59-54 on Jan. 24 at Asbury.
Farris said because of their earlier meeting that the Grenadiers got a handle on how Asbury played.
The Grenadiers got a strong finish from Lindsey Rumph, freshman guard. Rumph scored four points in the last minute of the game.
“Third string doesn’t get in a lot,” Chambers said.
“I’m glad they can get in the game and score.”
