Intramurals program continues to add activities, participants

Students looking to become active on campus at IU Southeast and have an itch to be competitive against fellow classmates outside the classroom have found their niche in IU Southeast Intramural Sports program.

Six IUS basketball players suspended

Six IUS basketball players have been suspended following a brawl during the basketball game between IU Southeast and Berea on Feb. 18. According to NAIA bylaws, “Any players who were involved in fighting or left the bench during the incident will serve a one-game suspension.”

Grenadier seniors sent out in style

The IUS women’s basketball team closed out their 2010 home schedule and the careers of two seniors Vannessa Stauble, center, and Alisha Briner, forward, on senior night against Kentucky Intercollegiate Athletic Conference opponent Alice Lloyd, on Tuesday, Feb. 16.

Senior baseball player overcomes life’s obstacles

The IUS baseball team is beginning a new season. This will also be the last season for Kyle Lenn, general studies senior. Lenn plays left field and designated hitter for the Grenadiers.

Strong second half propels IUS past Brescia

On Wednesday, Feb. 3, the No. 4-ranked IUS men’s basketball team defeated visiting Brescia University 91-63. The Grenadiers started slow, trailing the Brescia Bearcats for most of the first half. Then, with only three minutes left in the half, the Grenadiers took their first lead of the game at 30-29 and never looked back. The Grenadiers led 41-34 at the half.

Women’s assistant coach in 18th season on sideline

In 1992, Bernie Merkel, women’s basketball assistant coach, an IUS alumnus and former IUS basketball player, had been laid off from his employer. He was looking for a job to keep him busy and make some extra money while looking for his next career opportunity. Merkel returned to his former coach at IU Southeast, Jim Morris, to see if there were any openings at the school.

Sophomore hopes for career in finance following college

Kevin Slaughter, 20-year-old finance sophomore, plays guard for the IUS men’s basketball team, but that’s not all he does. Even though he said he loves playing basketball, he doesn’t see it in his future after graduation. His goal is to become a stock broker, hopefully in Chicago. “My father used to live there,” Slaughter said. “I think that’s where I want to live, too.”

Baseball team looks to build on past success

The IUS baseball team is set to start the spring season. After working hard during the off-season, the team is looking to make this season one of their best. The team began in late August when players and coaches worked together during tryouts to gather a team of their best talent. Since then, they worked to prepare themselves for the upcoming season.

Grenadiers remain undefeated in KIAC

The IU Southeast women’s basketball team defeated visiting Kentucky Intercollegiate Athletic conference opponent Midway College 94-69 on Tuesday, Jan. 19, at the Activities Building. With the win, IU Southeast improved their record to 13-7 and 6-0 in the KIAC. Midway’s record dropped to 6-14 and 2-2 in the KIAC.

Women’s basketball shuts down Eagles

The IUS women’s basketball team defeated the Asbury College Eagles on Saturday, Jan. 23, 77-54 in the Activities Building. The win pushes the Grenadiers’ record to 14-7 overall and is the fifth in a row for the IUS women, who remain undefeated in conference play, with a 7-0 record in the Kentucky Intercollegiate Athletic Conference.

Grenadiers win homecoming game

The IUS men’s basketball team defeated Asbury College 84-55 on Homecoming Day, which was Saturday, Jan. 23. This pushes their record 17-3 overall and 6-0 in Kentucky Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play. The game was played in front of over 1,000 fans, nearly a record for IU Southeast. Jazzmarr Ferguson, IUS junior guard, doubled the next-highest scorer in the game, finishing with 24 points and he also handed out a game high six assists.
