Alumni Association expands student scholarship program

As part of a new initiative to help the campus community, the IU Southeast Alumni Association is offering six scholarships to students for the 2012-13 school year. The scholarship amounts total $10,000, with six $1,000 scholarships and one $4,000 scholarship for Athletics. Of the six scholarships, each one will be divided between the six schools at IU Southeast. Jerry Wayne, vice chancellor of Alumni and Community Relations, said half of the scholarship amount for the individual schools came from the organization’s scholarship account. The other half was provided by Chancellor Sandra Patterson-Randles.

Last spring, Dale Brown, secondary education senior and president of the Student Alumni Association, and Matt Owen, political science senior, met to discuss new tradition ideas to implement for the 70th anniversary of IU Southeast. Brown, Owen and fellow members of the SAA came up with the tradition of burying a time capsule on campus. “We thought a time capsule would be a great tradition for the campus because it is a collaboration and a larger connectivity for the organizations and university departments,” Brown said. “It’s a great way for student alumni to look back and see the university from the past.”

Students arrived at McCullough Plaza wearing nearly nothing for the second annual Nearly Naked Mile on Oct. 6. The Student Alumni Association hosted the Nearly Naked Mile to help raise awareness about the SAA and recruit new members. Due to rain, it was rescheduled from Sept. 29 to Oct. 6 due to rain. Josh Kornberg, communications senior and SAA president, said the SAA wanted to have an event that was fun and enjoyable.
