Local elections result in education changes

The recent changes in state elections could have a large impact on the IUS campus, as well as the state of Indiana for future years. New Superintendent of Public Instruction While Nov. 6 marked re-election for President Barack Obama, local Indiana elections also resulted in Democrat Glenda Ritz beating out Tony Bennett, Republican incumbent, in the race for superintendent of public instruction by capturing 52 percent of the vote.

Student veterans compete in statewide competition

The IU Southeast Student Veterans’ Organization placed second in the Indiana State Student Veterans Hall of Fame Competition on Oct. 27 at the NCAA Hall of Champions in downtown Indianapolis. Sponsored by the Military Family Research Institute at Purdue University, this event allowed Indiana college campuses to showcase their achievements and give them a chance to compete against the top SVOs in the state. Shelley MacDermid, director of MFRI at Purdue University, described the purpose of the competition.

SGA proposes DVD rental kiosk for students on campus

Students expose alter egos

Glitter, wigs, costumes, fake beards and more could be found in the Ogle Center Oct. 27 for the Gay Straight Alliance’s Drag Show. This was the first drag show of the school year, with the second to follow in March 2013. Dylan Kidwell, secondary education sophomore and GSA president, said he thought the show went well. “We didn’t have as big of a crowd as I would have liked, but the turnout was great,” Kidwell said. “It gives us something to push harder for in the spring.”

Broadcast presentation hosts actress Hilary Duff

The National Society of Leadership and Success hosted multi-faceted celebrity, Hilary Duff on Oct. 16 in a live broadcast called, “A Conversation with Hilary Duff.” The broadcast was web-streamed live to more than 320 colleges nationwide. This was the second broadcast for the 2012-13 series sponsored by the group. Set up like a live interview, these broadcasts are meant to inspire and build leaders who make the world a better place.

No qualms about spandex, volleyball player serves up attitude

Most Tuesday and Thursday nights, Jade Troutman, secondary education junior, can be found sporting a red and white jersey, black spandex shorts and a couple of knee pads along with the rest of the IUS volleyball team. Standing at 5 feet 8 inches and bearing the number 22 on her back, Troutman plays the position of middle blocker. Troutman said she first decided she wanted to play volleyball when she was in elementary school. “I was just going to play every sport and see which one I liked best,” Troutman said.

Grenadiers take knee, Knights conquer courts

The IUS women’s tennis team hosted the Bellarmine Knights on Sept. 30. The Grenadiers first faced the Knights at the DePauw Invitational earlier this season. Rebecca Porter, Bellarmine women’s tennis assistant head coach, said they normally do pretty well when facing IU Southeast.

Graphic design lecturer aims to capture memories

Jonathan Ruth, visiting lecturer in graphic design, said, when capturing a photo, he is “simply looking, filtering and creating.” “When I’m really involved in the process, I’m not completely conscious of thinking in that moment,” Ruth said. “That’s not to say I’m not aware, rather I’m not second guessing myself.” Ruth has been practicing the art of photography for 14 years.

Graduates win honors at research challenge

IU Southeast competed in the annual Certified Financial Analyst Institute Global Investment Research Challenge on Feb. 23, walking away with second place honors. The team from IU Southeast consisted of graduates Greg Darnell, Tim Crockett, Matt Yost, Jim Magill and Erica Lange. According to the CFA’s Facebook page, the CFA Institute’s Research Challenge mission is to allow students the opportunity to produce an equity research report based off of the investment industry. Kevin Ragland, professor of Investment Management and faculty sponsor of the group, elaborated on the research challenge.

IUS Dining Services conducts Food Court survey

IU Southeast’s Dining and Conference Services is conducting a survey in search of feedback from students, faculty and staff on the services and products provided by the Food Court and University Grounds and Library Bistro coffee shops. The survey is located on the homepage of Dining and Conference Services. Julie Ingram, director of Conference and Dining Services, said, when completing the survey, students may leave as much or as little information as they wish. “In Dining Services, we are always looking to receive feedback from the campus community on the products and services we provide,” Ingram said.

Musical performance premieres

The Robinson Theater will open with its first play — a musical called The Fantasticks — of the semester on Feb. 10 at 8 p.m. in the Ogle Center. The original production of The Fantasticks first premiered in May 1960 in Greenwich Village, NY, and has been appearing on off-Broadway for the past 70 years. It is he longest-running show in the U.S. “It’s become such a classic show,” Jesse Brown, theater graduate, said. “I think that’s in large part due to the fact that it tells such a simple story, one we can relate to on some level.”
