Registrar runs back to campus culture

Patrick Fawcett, Registrar, has been working at IU Southeast for six months. He has worked in higher education since 1996. Fawcett said he missed the four-year environment and wanted to be part of a campus culture again, so he left his previous job of nine years with Ivy Tech. When the position became available, he applied for the job at IU Southeast.

Geology adjunct explores through travel

Like most young adults, Ronald Endris, adjunct professor of geology, went to college right out of high school. He said he did not feel as though college was for him, so he decided to quit attending. However, it did not take long for Endris to realize he had made a mistake. He realized he wanted to go back to school. Endris said quitting college and then re-attending was the biggest turning point in his life. “At the time, I had a wife and two kids,” Endris said. “I saved money to go to school while working for a paint company.”

Marketing Club manages to multiply new members

The Marketing Club kicked-off the semester by holding a recruitment day on Sept. 26 in the Hoosier Room to gain new members. Jonathon Salazar, marketing and business senior, is the president of the Marketing Club. “We’re hoping to increase our membership numbers after today,” Salazar said.

Sorority offers connection with community

Zeta Phi Beta is the only African American sorority on campus. Dashay Johnson, junior, is the president of the Zetas and Brianne Miles, senior, is the vice president. Miles said she joined Zeta for the sisterhood and to feel wanted. “I have a lot of sisters to rely on,” Miles said. “I am an only child and these girls have my back no matter what.”

Nursing program improves learning, opens opportunity

In order to get into the School of Nursing at IU Southeast, there are different steps students must take. First, students have to take several pre-nursing required classes and maintain a GPA of 2.7 for pre-nursing classes and a 2.5 for their overall GPA. Students will take a KAPLAN Admission Assessment Test for Reading Comprehension. In February, applications are to be submitted for admission to the Nursing Program.

Sergeant shares self-defense safety

Monica Wise, IUS Police sergeant, held a self-defense class on March 14. Wise said she started the class several years ago because there was no personal safety class on campus. She has since added different demonstrations and provided updated safety tips to the class.

Grenadiers win then lose to Ravens

The IUS baseball team had its first home game on Tuesday, Feb. 28. The Grenadiers played against the Anderson University Ravens in a doubleheader. The teams split. The Grenadiers shut out the Ravens the first game, with a score of 5-0.

IUS men get over-confident

The IUS men’s basketball team played St. Louis College of Pharmacy during the first round of the Kentucky Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Tournament on, Feb. 25. IU Southeast was ranked No. 14 in the tournament. The Grenadiers started out the first half slow. Both teams were close in points during most of the first half, but the St. Louis Eutectics were up by four.

Professor lives life to fullest

William Sweigart, associate professor of English, has held this position for 22 years and said his life was changed when he was in the Peace Corps for three years. “Being in the Peace Corps made me realize what’s valuable in life,” Sweigart said. “It gave me a lens to view American Society and the over emphasis on capitalism.” Sweigart is from Pennsylvania. Since then, he has lived in several other places. He lived in Liberia for three years, and he also lived in New York where he taught English. In 1972, he went to San Francisco to visit a friend and stayed there for 18 years.

Halftime scrimmage delivers smiles

The Flyers, a Special Olympics basketball team from Louisville, is a program that has been going on for seven years. The Flyers scrimmaged during halftime at the IUS men’s basketball game on Feb. 9. “There are 12 players on the team this year,” Danny Lane, The Flyers head coach, said.

Professor tells tales through novels, ghost tours

David Domine, adjunct professor of Germanic studies, has travelled to several countries including Austria, Germany, the Philippines, Spain, Mexico and Italy seeking cultural experiences. However, his biggest interests are the ghost hauntings in Old Louisville. Domine lived in an 1895 Chateauesque home in Old Louisville. He said living in this old house gave him inspiration for his ghost novels and tours he gives around Old Louisville.

Faculty fill in for vice chancellor

Ruth Garvey-Nix, vice chancellor of Student Affairs, has been out since last semester, recovering from surgery. Due to the recovery process taking longer than expected, IU Southeast has temporarily filled in her position. Anne Skuce, director of Admissions and assistant vice chancellor for Enrollment Management, and Chris Crews, associate director and acting director of Admissions, are filling in until Garvey-Nix is able to return. Crews became acting director of Admissions on Jan. 17. He will hold this position for five to six months.
