More than 100 people attended the 90’s Throwback Campus Boogie on Thursday, Sept. 5, in the Richard K. Stem Concert Hall.
Six student organizations battled in this years 90’s themed annual dance competition for cash prizes and the Campus Boogie plaque.
Competitors performed choreographed dances to a live music set from DJ Legit. Top 90s hits were played, ranging from “Baby One More Time” by Britney Spears to “Ice Ice Baby” by Vanilla Ice.
A panel of four judges voted for the “Bel-Air Gents” of the Phi Beta Sigma fraternity to win first place in the competition, with a reward of $300.
The Bel Air Gents wore 90’s-inspired outfits that resembled costumes from “The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air.” The group also choreographed a dance to “The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air” soundtrack that they practiced for two months before the performance date.
“Everyone was satisfied with the performance,”Johnathan Wheat, member of the Bel-Air Gents said. “It’s amazing, and we won all the categories expect for one.”
“My favorite group has to be Phi Beta Sigma,” Amanda Sharp, secondary education senior and event organizer, said. “They are our fraternity brothers so we know how hard they worked. The judges were floored by them, as soon as they started tallying votes they were like ‘we already know who the winners are.’”
The winning group won most outrageous costume, most spirited dance group, and best 90’s music selection.
“We went through different songs, and chose what we could move to and have a lot of energy with,” Wheat said.
TKE fraternity won $200, coming in second place. The group wore matching black exercise attire and danced in unison to 90’s workout music.
Sigma Kappa, the “Sassy Sig Kapp,” took home third place for their performance that involved cheerleading stints, back flips and cartwheels.
“I liked the Sigma Kappas, they worked their butts off,” Micaela Dale, marketing senior and event organizer, said. “All the girls worked their butts off, but they won because they deserve it and they did awesome. But everyone did an amazing job.”
The Gay-Straight Alliance, or “Pride Squad,” was among other groups to perform. Event host Kelvin Ology introduced them as “the group that may be small, but they know how to ride,” followed by a group member galloping on stage, riding a stick pony.
Alpha Phi and Phi Sigma Sigma also competed in the boogie competition.
Three-member-group “Icey Hot” opened the event with a two-person dance to “Ice Ice Baby.” One member dressed in a Where’s Waldo costume danced behind the other group members. “Icey Hot” did not perform as competitors.
“I thought it [the event] was really good,” Ashley Kern, secondary education junior, said. “It was my first campus boogie actually. I loved that the theme was 90’s because I love 90’s music and I thought everyone did a good job of combining music and dance moves together.”
The event was sponsored by the Student Program Council and organized by Zeta Pi Chapter of the Zeta Phi Beta Sorority. This was the closing event for operation takeover week.
Sharp said she was happy with the event that the organizers worked on putting together for a month and a half.
“The energy was really high. We were all really excited,” Sharp said. “It went really smooth, and this is probably the smoothest event I’ve ever done. This is the first time we’ve ever coordinated a Campus Boogie.”
“Seeing everyone out in the crowd hyped was really awesome and I hope we can do this again next year,” Dale said.
The event was followed by a 45-minute performance from three-member poetry group “The Mayhem Poets.”
The poets said they mostly perform at inner city schools and met at Rutgers University in New Jersey.
