Students who moved into a residence hall last semester must re-sign their leases by August.
For academic year leases, the deadline to guarantee you stay in the apartment you currently occupy was Sunday, March 1. The deadline to re-sign a 12-month lease is the third week of August.
Although re-signing leases will be ongoing until all the residence halls are filled, post-deadline signees will be placed on a list with incoming students.
Currently about 88 students have re-signed for a room on campus for another year, not including the incoming students.
“The lodges are close enough to home, but far enough that I don’t have to go,” Chad Duncan, computer science freshman, said after re-signing. “I like the freedom, lots of stuff I can’t do at home.”
There is no data to state specifically why students are choosing not to re-sign, or if a certain lodge is losing more students than others.
Ashley Begley, fine arts sophomore, said she chose not to re-sign because of her age, 21, and the abundance of rules about residence life.
“They’re a lot better than most dorms I’ve seen, but all the little rules like no alcohol, not having the same person over on a regular basis, no offering couples apartments and the expense as well made me decide not to re-sign,” Begley said.
Due to last year’s no-shows and last minute cancellations, residence life has added a cancellation fee to the lease agreement.
“This change resulted from approximately 15 or 20 no-shows and cancellations last fall,” Jim Schlinsog, director of Residence Life and Housing, said.
Early cancellation of the lease can result in forfeiting the deposit and a $500 dollar late cancellation fee.
