The IUS Library is a resource available to assist students in all stages of their university careers –– from the first audio tour of first-year seminar to the final research paper of senior seminar
“You can use of lot of library resources without walking into the building,” Rosen said. Online library resources include the “ask a librarian” feature and online research databases.
Rosen emphasized the importance of utilizing scholarly sources in research.
“No one who is a student at IUS should be using Google for research,” he said.
The library staff members are committed to serving students, Rosen said. He said librarians on duty are familiar with the curriculum so they can offer guidance to students who need help finding research materials.
“You don’t want to spend your time beating your head against a virtual wall,” Rosen said.
In addition to supplying the IUS community with books, the library also has a large video collection, sound recordings, newspapers, computers, a phone charging station and iPads and tablets that students can check out for a few days at a time, Rosen said.
“We are pretty proud of the resources we offer,” he said.
Amanda Sharp, secondary education senior, said one of the resources she uses most are the group study rooms.
“I like to be able to talk while I study,” she said.
Sharp said she is appreciative of the resources available to her through the library, but she sometimes wishes the library held longer hours during the weeks before finals.
Rosen said the library is probably open later than almost any other office on campus and the library is open seven days a week. Library hours are:
● Monday-Thursday, 8 a.m. -10 p.m.
● Friday, 8 a.m.-5 p.m.
● Saturday, 9 a.m.-5 p.m.
● Sunday noon-6 p.m.
The library provides a variety of study areas to fit different student needs, Rosen said. The bottom floor of the library is the quiet study area for students who prefer a silent atmosphere, he said. Rosen also said that many students enjoy the second floor of the library where there is more noise and activity. The third floor provides a large space for student organizations to hold events, he said.
“The library is a building that celebrates scholars and study,” Rosen said.
He said the entire building is designed around providing a comfortable scholastic environment. There are several different types of furniture in the library including desks, study carrels, couches, tables and chairs, he said. Rosen also said that the several windows in the library offer great views of campus.
Jonathon Simpson, criminal justice freshman, said he took the audio library tour as part of his first-year seminar class last semester.
“I’m happy with the resources there,” he said.
Simpson said he usually uses the library computers on the second floor for research and homework while he is on campus.
Rosen said another valuable resource the library offers is the inter-library loan program which allows students to access books from different libraries. This service is free to students, he said. Students also have access to books from other libraries in the Indiana University-system.
“IU is a statewide institution with one of the greatest libraries in the world,” Rosen said. Students can go onto the online catalog and request materials that will then be delivered to the IUS Library.
Rosen said the librarians are friendly and ready to help students get the resources they need.
