Since we are on the topic of politics, I didn’t want to disappoint.
As a journalism student, I like paying attention to the news, but most of my friends don’t know squat about the election coming up between Democrat Barack Obama and Republican John McCain.
The only opinions they have are the opinions of their parents. Form your own opinions, people! This is going to be a huge election for our nation, especially with the economy the way it is.
I’m not going to sit here and bash McCain, even though he is old, boring and about to have a heart attack, but I want to tell you what he is bringing to the table so you can make your own choices. I will of course fill you in on Obama and his plans if he is elected president.
McCain says he will keep taxes low and cut them where he can. He wants to double the child tax exemption from $3,500 to $7,000, and cut the business tax rate to prevent jobs from moving overseas.
He also said he would open new markets to American goods and services and prepare workers to compete in the world economy. He will create millions of jobs. How? Who knows, but it’s one of his economic goals.
As far as energy is concerned, McCain has things covered there too. He will produce more energy at home, drill new wells offshore, build more nuclear power plants and develop clean coal technology.
And for a second I was worried.
Obama said he would cut taxes for 95 percent of the all working families, eliminate capital gains taxes for small business and start up businesses, and he will stop giving tax breaks to the corporations that ship jobs overseas and start giving those tax breaks to the companies that create good jobs here in America.
As for the energy crisis, Obama has a goal, which is a 10-year plan to end our dependence on foreign oil.
He wants to make it easier for Americans to afford U.S. built fuel-efficient cars and wants to invest in renewable sources of energy such as wind power and solar power.
He wants to finally meet our moral obligation to provide every child with a world-class education, rather than just those who can afford it, and make sure every young American can afford college.
He vows to finally close the pay gap between the sexes and provide paid sick and “better family leave” for workers.
Obama has said he is finally going to end this war in Iraq responsibly and finish the fight against al-Qaida and the Taliban in Afghanistan.
He’s also a bad ass candidate because he doesn’t come out and say he is for abortion or gay marriage, but he says he is going to work with people on all issues to reduce unwanted preggies and ensure that gays and lesbians have the right to “visit the person they love in the hospital and to live lives free of discrimination.”
Of course there are the biggest issues of all, is McCain too old and is Obama ready to lead?
Not saying that I’m for Obama or anything, but in a world that is becoming more and more communist, why not go for the guy who is willing to take a stand to make things better.
He isn’t another judgmental politician that wants be in charge for his own greater good. I’m not saying that McCain is, but I’m just not a fan.
And he is old! The man is a dinosaur.
I’m just saying, I’ve formed my own opinion and I think it’s time you do too.
