The business school suffered a loss during spring break.
Gregory Krieger, visiting lecturer in accounting, died Wednesday, March 24, at Schneck Medical Center in Seymour, Ind. He was 55 years old.
Krieger taught four courses in accounting and finance this semester.
Jay White, dean of business school, said Krieger had been part of the business school family for a long time, and he said they were shook up when they heard of his death.
“He was an outstanding individual, had strong integrity and he was great with the students,” White said. “He was a friend to many, and we will miss our friend,” White said.
Krieger was a Master of Business Administration graduate from the IUS School of Business.
White said Krieger had started teaching at the School of Business as an adjunct lecturer in spring 2001, teaching one course.
He became a visiting lecturer in accounting and finance in spring 2006 and began teaching four courses per semester.
Sarah Yeager, accounting and marketing sophomore and a student in Krieger’s Financial Accounting class, A201, said she was shocked and saddened when she heard of Krieger’s death.
She said one thing her classmates agreed on was how much he did to encourage them.
“Like most freshmen coming into A201, I really didn’t know what to expect or if I would like my first taste of accounting,” Yeager said. “Krieger helped me overcome those uncertainties and gave me the confidence to know that I can make it in accounting. He was the first person to really encourage me in my chosen major and I will always remember him for that.”
Beth Bloom, accounting sophomore, also had Krieger for Financial Accounting.
“He would always smile and greet us by name outside of class,” Bloom said. “Krieger was always so cheerful in class. He always had a smile on his face and constantly had some joke to tell us.”
Bloom said Krieger’s teaching encouraged her to stay with her major.
Krieger also participated in the annual business school golf scramble.
White said Krieger would always sponsored a couple of students for the scramble.
In lieu of Krieger’s passing, Krieger’s finance courses will be taught by Uric Dufrene, professor of business administration.
Krieger’s accounting day courses will be taught by Chris Bjornson, associate professor of accounting, and his evening accounting courses will be taught by Jeff Byrne, adjunct lecturer in accounting.
