A water pipe broke during the night of Jan. 22, causing extensive damage in the north entrance of the Hausfeldt Building.
“The supply line in the wall froze, and it broke during the night,” Jim Wolfe, director of Physical Plant, said.
Wolfe also said the pipes have heat tracers to keep them from freezing, but something failed, which caused the pipe to freeze and eventually bust.
The Hausfeldt Building was bought in late 2010 by IU Southeast. It was leased in previous years by the university.
An architectural firm did an assessment of the building when it was originally purchased.
The building also serves as the base for the Indiana Department of Commerce Regional Economic Development offices. Wolfe said the damage wasn’t causing any inconveniences or difficulties to the employees of the building.
“We did the repairs ourselves,” Wolfe said.
The repairs were billed at $1,500.
