An award-winning cellist played at IU Southeast in the Recital Hall of the Ogle Center on April 1.
Davin Lee, native of Korea and IU Bloomington student, played three compositions along with her pianist for the night, Carlin Ma.
“I thoroughly enjoyed [the concert,]” John Greenman, New Albany resident, said.
Lee is enrolled in the IU Jacobs School of Music in Bloomington.
Lee received a bachelor’s degree in music specializing in cello performance from the Korean National University of the Arts in 2006.
Lee also received her master’s degree at Peabody Conservatory of John Hopkins University.
The Jacobs School of Music has more than 180 full-time faculty members to educate and help performers concentrate on their art.
Lee played “Arpeggione Sonata A Minor” by Franz Schubert, an Austrian composer from the early Romantic era.
She also performed “Sonata C major op. 119” by the Russian composer Sergei Prokofiev.
Ma said this piece was written to help uplift the Russian spirits during the Stalin regime in the 1940s.
The third composition Lee played was “Paganini Variations” by Rossini, an Italian composer.
All three pieces Lee played were not originally composed to be played on the cello.
Lee said it made playing them and learning them a little more difficult.
“I thought it was outstanding,” Carolyn Greenman, New Albany resident and IUS alumnae, said. “It was excellent.”
Lee has taken master classes from many influential composers, including Grammy-winning cellist Yoyo Ma.
Lee has performed at various places, such as the Korean Broadcasting System Philharmonic and the Korean National University of Arts Orchestra.
She also performed recitals at the Kumho Young Artist Series and the Kennedy Center Millennium Series.
Lee has received first prizes in Korea for competing in the Seage Ilbo Competition, the Seoul Youth Chamber Music Competition and the Korean Broadcasting System Competition, as well as others.
The concert was a part of the Discovery Series, which is sponsored by Videogap International.
