Carlos Mitchell, former guard for the IUS men’s basketball team, signed with Cincinnati Slam of the Universal Basketball Association.
The announcement and signing for Mitchell —who played for the Grenadiers from 2006 through 2009 — was on Oct. 24.
“He is one of many former IUS student athletes who are doing great things in their life after graduation,” Joe Glover, athletic director, said.
Mitchell represented the Grenadiers at the NAIA national tournament numerous times, along with being a player on several Kentucky Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Championship teams.
“He was part of three regular seasons and three post season championship teams at IUS,” Brad Zellner, IUS men’s basketball associate head coach, said. “In his senior year, the team advanced to the final eight of the NAIA Division 2 Tournament.”
Throughout his career, Mitchell scored a total of 1,296 points. He ranked 11th on the all-time scoring list and ended his career on a high note — in the top 10 of various IUS historical statistics categories.
“He is also a two-time, all-conference selection,” Zellner said.
Glover said Mitchell had great work ethic, which helped him stand out from the other basketball players.
“Once he knew what he wanted to do, then there was no stopping him,” Glover said. “That trait will undoubtedly serve him well in life.”
Zellner also commented on Mitchell’s work ethic.
“Carlos was a tireless worker,” Zellner said. “He was a leader on and off the floor. He brought nothing but the best effort for practices and games.”
Zellner said the future appears to be very bright for the former Grenadier.
“His ceiling is high,” Zellner said. “He just needs a chance to prove to people that he can play basketball at a high level.”
Glover said Mitchell’s IUS undergraduate degree will help him accomplish anything in the future.
“His degree combined with his overall ability and work ethic will aide him in having a successful career in any area he chooses to pursue,” Glover said.
Zellner said he is pleased with Mitchell being able to sign with Cincinnati Slam.
“I am always proud to see a former athlete realize his dream and get to pursue basketball beyond college,” Zellner said.
