The Student Government Association met for its weekly meeting on Thursday, Nov. 8.
A probationary senator was introduced and another senator was sworn in during the meeting, among ideas and discussions of implementing a Redbox on campus.
Redbox
Melissa Hill, fiscal officer and campus card manager, discussed the possibility of a DVD rental kiosk on campus and asked for the SGA’s help.
“I wanted to get some feedback from the students to see if this is something they would like to see and use on campus before I exert further effort on this initiative,” Hill said.
Hill said she spoke with the company Redbox about obtaining a kiosk for campus, but Redbox said IU Southeast was too small of a campus for one.
However, IU Southeast may purchase and own a DVD rental kiosk.
This is an option Hill is trying to approve with the help of the SGA.
“This is a very involved process,” Hill said. “The campus has approved the idea and the funding for it, but it is now stuck in purchasing.”
If a kiosk were to be bought for the IUS campus, however, students would only be able to purchase DVDs with their UCards.
“Because of the [Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard] compliance and the risk of outside companies having access to our network we cannot accept credit cards as payment,” Hill said.
By only using UCards as payment, Hill said the DVD can be charged to students’ Bursar accounts in cases of late returns or no returns.
“No other campus in the United States has ever only accepted the student university card as payment,” Hill said. “IUS would be the first.”
Since this has never been done before, Hill would have to work with whichever company provides the kiosk to develop the programming for only accepting the UCard.
“IUS’ concern is that since this has never been done before, we have no one [on campus] to talk to and ask how it’s been going for them,” Hill said.
Stephen Prather, radiography senior and SGA senate chair, said he had previously looked into the idea of a DVD rental kiosk on campus also but got the same answer from Redbox as Hill, so he let the subject go.
“I never thought of purchasing one for the campus,” Prather said. “That is definitely a different approach.”
Prather said the SGA would work on a survey to distribute to students to obtain some feedback.
“We will work on having a survey administered to students by the first week of December,” Prather said.
Probationary Senator
The SGA introduced their new probationary senator, Brandon Morris, computer science sophomore, who will be working with Dejan Tomanic, political science and international studies junior and SGA technology officer.
Morris was the SGA campus event coordinator at Ivy Tech Community College in Sellersburg, Ind.
“I appreciate the opportunity to be involved,” Morris said. “I look forward to meeting everybody.”
Prather said Morris will be working on a welcome page for the SGA website that is still in the works.
New Senator
Solongo Ganchuluun, business junior, was sworn into the SGA as a new senator by Prather.
Stephon Moore, political science sophomore and SGA senator, said Ganchuluun became a part of SGA this semester after going through the nomination committee.
“She did well on her assignments as a probationary senator,” Moore said. “It was a no-brainer to vote her in after seeing the work she is capable of.”
Moore said future goals of the SGA include resolving a refund policy that gave a number of students trouble at the beginning of this semester, the parking situation and the addition of some majors to the various schools.
“Some of these things are ambitious, but our main goal is to try to be a voice for students,” Moore said. “Our goal is and has always been to connect with the students and work with the administration to propose sound, tangible solutions.”
