The Horizon

Diary of a college basketball refugee

IUS Horizon March 18, 2013

I was born a Hoosier fan. I bleed crimson— literally. As soon as I exited the womb, I’m pretty sure I was put into my little baby candy stripes and cooed a sweet “Hoo-Hoo-Hoosiers” in my mother’s...

IUS set to host KIAC championship

IUS Horizon October 28, 2012
The Kentucky Intercollegiate Athletic Conference selected IU Southeast to host the semifinal and championship games this year. “I’m very honored to host the KIAC this year,” Joe Glover, athletic director, said. Previously, the KIAC was a Kentucky-school conference only, but it has now expanded to Indiana, Ohio and Pennsylvania, adding more teams to the competition throughout the years.

Politics need separation from religious beliefs

IUS Horizon October 26, 2012
IU Southeast made national headlines when Richard Mourdock, Republican candidate for the Indiana Senate, made a statement saying despite the “horrible situation” from which they occur, pregnancy from rape was “something God intended.” I am a Hoosier, born, raised and, most importantly, proud. When someone who is proposing to be a representative of this great state, says something so incredibly demeaning, it just makes me sad to see how far behind this state is in terms of moving forward politically. Nearly immediately, network news stations and social media began buzzing about the Senate-hopeful’s statement. Mourdock fell in line with other Republican candidates we have been subject to this election season that are trying to negotiate the severity of rape.

Equal rights requires call to action

IUS Horizon October 14, 2012
A suited 19-year-old man stands before the Iowa House in 2011 speaking eloquently on behalf of same-sex marriage. He spoke about being raised by two mothers, and how that has had zero impact on the content of his character. I first saw Zach Wahls’ impressive testimony multiple times on different social media websites. Wahls’ testimony is the most popular political video on YouTube, with 18 million views. Nearly two years later, I had the privilege to meet Wahls in person when he came to IU Southeast on Oct. 10. Wahls told us his story and how the 21-year-old Iowan ended up in the Hoosier state advocating equal rights.

Reds ready to rival for championship title

IUS Horizon September 30, 2012
Late in the ninth inning, Aroldis Chapman stands on the mound and sends a 99 mph fastball toward the Dodgers’ Hanley Ramirez. Ramirez sends a bouncer straight into the mitt of second baseman Brandon Phillips. Phillips passes the ball over to Zach Cozart and Cozart to first baseman Joey Votto for a double play to end the game, making the Reds the National League Central champions. For the second time in three years, the Reds have clinched the National League Central title, but, unlike their 2010 showing in the playoffs, this year the team is ready.

Editor calls foul on excessive celebration

IUS Horizon September 9, 2012
It is that time of year, sports fans. Swap out your old blue Manning jersey for the new orange one and stock up on your Terrible Towels. It is time for some football. Going into what I hope will be a very entertaining season of football, there is one thing on my mind — what is going to happen in the end zone? It seems like in the NFL more than any other professional team, the players and viewers alike care more about what happens after the receiver catches the ball than the actual play.

Grenadiers power over Patriots

IUS Horizon August 26, 2012
IU Southeast ,3-2, faced off against the Patriots of St. Catharine, 4-1, Aug. 21 in the Activities Building. The newly renovated crimson bleachers contained a fairly large crowd of St. Catharine and IUS fans for the first home game of the Lady Grenadiers season. During the summer session, the Athletics Department updated the bleachers in the gym to accommodate for a safer environment for the Grenadier fans.

IUS Horizon August 6, 2012

Center collaborates with local companies

IUS Horizon April 1, 2012
The Applied Research and Education Center is working to provide research for local organizations. AREC was formed 12 years ago as an organization for the IUS campus to provide assistance in analyzing trends with companies in the community. Currently, the AREC is involved with multiple projects in the Southern Indiana and Kentucky area. “A lot of our services are things that can be provided through private consulting firms but at a much higher cost,” Melissa Fry, assistant professor of sociology and director of AREC, said. “We are a good opportunity for people to get research that they need done but at a much lower cost, and, for non-profit organizations, that is a really important factor. We make it possible for them to do things they otherwise couldn’t do.”

IUS impacts economy

IUS Horizon March 11, 2012
According to the economic impact study released on Feb. 16, IU Southeast contributed $124.4 million to the local economy, including thousands of jobs. “The $124 million economic impact figure represents the direct spending of IUS in Indiana,” Mark Land, associate vice president for University Communications at Indiana University, said. “It has two components — direct spending and indirect or induced spending.Direct spending is for employee salaries and spending with vendors and companies in Indiana that serve the campus in some way. It also includes spending by students and visitors to the campus.” The entire Indiana University system, including all eight regional campuses and IU Health, impacted the economy with an $11.5 billion in the 2010-11 fiscal year.

Performers swagger for drag show

IUS Horizon March 11, 2012
Dressed scantily clad in high heels, drag queens took over the stage in Stem Hall for the annual IUS Drag Show on March 3. The Gay Straight Alliance put on the drag show for the fourth consecutive year. This year’s show featured seven acts comprised of students, staff and members of the community. The show was a collaborative effort from many organizations on campus. The Student Nursing Association helped promote the production of the drag show, as well as the IUS Civil Liberties Union, Phi Sigma Sigma and the Gamers’ Society.
