Will Gantt, theater junior, said he first received a taste of theater on a field trip as a child in Alabama.
“Our class went to see some play — I don’t even remember what it was — and they served ice cream in little tubs with wooden spoons.” Gantt said. “I thought it was the coolest thing to eat ice cream and watch people play around.”
While in high school Gantt said he was really drawn to movies and thought he might try acting after seeing “Good Will Hunting” with Matt Damon in 1997.
Members of the Student Veterans Organization said they have an incredible asset in the form of ex-Marine, Richard Madley, geosciences junior.
Madley suffered a head injury while training in the Marines, which left him disabled with severe headaches and potential seizures.
“I’ve learned so much since I started school,” Madley said, ”but if I had a second chance I’d join right back up.”
Kendra Neafus, visiting lecturer in Spanish, is passionate about all aspects of the Spanish language and Hispanic culture.
“I first took Spanish in high school and fell in love with the sense of decoding a secret message,” Neafus said.
Neafus said her first Spanish teacher at New Albany High School inspired her with stories of traveling to Spanish-speaking countries, like Chile, and would speak Spanish to them almost exclusively, creating a challenge Neafus enjoyed.
IU Southeast held its fall Open House, with the theme “Map Your Course,” on Oct. 29 in the University Center.
Coordinators of the event chose the theme “Map your Course,” to put students on the right track and reduce the stress associated with entering college.
High school seniors from around the IUS recruitment area, including 14 counties in Indiana and five in Kentucky, walked the paths through buildings on tours and attended workshops to get a look at the campus and information about the next steps needed to continue their education.
The Unified Communications software was recently updated on faculty and staff computers. The system has been renamed Microsoft Lync, but the power to connect remains the same.
Tom Sawyer, chief information officer, said the services offered are invaluable. Sawyer travels to the various IU regional campuses throughout the week, and he said the teleconferencing and instant messaging allows for him to be in two places at once.
"With Lync, I can use any of the sevices from anywhere, even a hotel room if I have Internet access,“ Sawyer said.
Staff from various departments pitched in during Advising Week, from Oct. 10 to Oct. 13, encouraging all students to meet with an adviser before registering for spring classes.
Some students can’t be bothered, then they’re not ready for graduation,” Ron Dunlop, adviser for the School of Business, said. “They need to come in so we can tell them where to head, regardless of their major.”
The theme of this year’s Advising Week was superheroes, and IU Southeast had its own caped crusader in the form of Captain Adviser.
Anna Morgan, nicknamed “That Coupon Lady,” gave a presentation on the art of couponing at the Adult Student Center on Oct. 4.
Morgan’s family includes her husband, four children and a dog.
She has a weekly budget of $75 that has to cover groceries, cleaning supplies and health and beauty aids.
The 19th annual Louisville AIDS Walk and Pet Trot occurred on Sept. 25, despite being rerouted due to the Sherman Minton Bridge closing.
Traditionally, the route to the event crossed the Clark Memorial Bridge but was unable to this year because the bridge serves as relief for congestion generated by the Sherman Minton shut down.

The summer break brought in the addition of a new assistant coach to the IUS volleyball team — Katie Tinsley.
Tinsley graduated from IU Southeast in 2009 with a bachelor’s degree in continuing studies and a certificate in medical transcription.
“I loved IUS when I was there,” Tinsley said. “Not just the school but playing volleyball, and I wanted to get involved again.”
