The No. 2 nationally ranked IUS men’s basketball team (15-3) beat Asbury (KY) by a score of 93-70 on Tuesday. The Grenadiers have now won 10 straight and remain undefeated in conference play.
On a bitterly cold night IU Southeast took a half to warm up but came out of the locker room in the second half on fire.
Leading by only 11 at halftime, the Grenadiers opened the floodgates in the second half and led by as many as 31 points.
“They gave us a really good run in the first half, but our guys came out to play in the second half and it was a route,” Derek Sims, associate head coach, said.
The Grenadiers had a consistent group effort, with six players scoring in double figures. Kevin Mitchell, senior guard, led IU Southeast with a team high 18 points. Cameron Mitchell, senior guard, added 17 points while Vernon Payne, junior forward/center tossed in 11. Jake Simpson, junior guard, and Kegan Clark, senior forward, each finished with 10 points.
“We always focus on getting to the rim and playing a fast pace, so that we are able to get high percentage shots,” Sims said. “Every practice we work on dribble penetration and kicking the ball out to the open shooter.”
Aishon White, junior guard who scored 11 points, said head coach Wiley Brown seemed pleased with his team’s effort.
“We try to never slow down, regardless of the score we have to keep pressuring the other team,” White said. “Coach was more upbeat with tonight’s performance than he was with the last home game.”
The Grenadiers next matchup is on Saturday at 4 p.m. when IU Southeast will face Alice Lloyd College.
